Alternatives to bookstore finally aplenty

At the beginning of each semester, buying books is one of the most important priorities for Brandeis students. While some students rely exclusively on the Brandeis bookstore, it seems that more and more are flocking to alternative establishments, including online stores. Buying books is always an expensive endeavorone that an Amazon.com or a local used book store can make a little less painful.

The ship and the caravan

The Intercultural Center (ICC) was a hotbed of activity last season with two farewell dinners. In April, the ICC and SASA (South Asian Students Association) banquets featured speeches by outgoing seniors, and by other students and staff wishing them well. Additionally, a new canvas mural on the ICC staircase was dedicated in May.

The Reckoning, Pt. 1

Editor's Note: Michael Sitzman wrote this as a personal remembrance of Sept. 11, 2001. He gave The Hoot permission to reprint it. This is part I of II.

WRITER'S BLOCK: Blind ambitions

I return to campus this September plagued by the same feelings that gnaw at me every year at this time, as I make the annual transition from summer to fall. Were just coming off of three months free from the time-consuming constraints of classes, papers and exams. Mid-May, I was just embarking upon what seemed like an eternity of endless options. I was really going to make the most of this summer. I had a job, of course.

FROMER: The Brandeis Bubble

Hold fast to dreams, for if dreams die, life is a broken-winged bird that cannot fly, Hold fast to dreams, for if dreams go, life is a barren field, frozen with snow. It was this Langston Hughes quote that I chose at the conclusion of high school to accompany my yearbook photograph. Looking back on this time four years ago, Im not so sure I knew what dreams I had, or to what I was holding fast. I have always been a girl with ambition, but the sort of dream-chasing I had experienced was far different from that in which I would later engage.

WILLARD: Summer planning

It seems early to start thinking about plans for next summer, as the fall semester has barely begun. Depending on what you want to get out of a summer, however, it may be a good idea to reflect on what you did this past summer at the very least. Whether your goal is to gain experience out of interest or in preparation for life after Brandeis, or you just want to make some extra cash for the upcoming year, you should seek out opportunities that are most worth your time. The best way to encourage a rewarding summer experience is to think now about what you would change about your time spent this year before the inevitable stress and distractions of a new semester leave you with a faded memory of even having all that time off from school.

BAIME: Answering Israel's Call

For too many years, American universities have been a liability to the State of Israel draining resources from instead of strengthening the U.S.-Israel relationship. But one Brandeis student organization is determined to transform our campus into a very tangible asset.

EDITORIAL: Rich Graves will be missed

One third of returning Brandeis Windows users have at one point or another used an epitaph to describe former Network Administrator Rich Graves after he kicked their virus-ridden computer off the network. Yet Graves actions were necessary and have kept the Brandeis network secure and connected.

Heller overseer not to run for governer

Heller overseer Charles D. Baker will not run for the governorship of Massachusetts on the Republican ticket, despite his previous speculation that he would. This may imply that current Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney will seek re-election and not step down at the end of his term as had previously been rumored.

U.S. News drops Brandeis to 34

Brandeis was ranked 34 by U.S. News and World Report magazine among the Nations Top Universities, dropping two places from last years rankings. Harvard and Princeton tied for first. Brandeis has been hovering in the 30s for some time now, fluctuating by one or two places each year, but never breaking into the top 25.

8 Brandeis students total sued for file sharing

A representative from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has stated, on condition of anonymity, that since [the] lawsuits began in September 2003, [the RIAA] has sued eight individual users on the Brandeis system. Five have settled, and three are still pending. The three that are pending were sued in during the latest round of law suits in May. ITS refused to divulge the alleged user or users identities.

Womens soccer kicks off season tomorrow

The Brandeis University Womens Soccer Team is already deep into preparation for the season, having started the fall preseason on Friday the 26th of August. All their hard work is setting them up for their home opener against MIT on Gordon Field tomorrow at 1pm. The team brings back 16 returning veterans, including 6 starters: captains Lauren Gregor 06 and Rachel Koffman 06 as well as juniors Brittany Douglass, Christine Fulton, Melissa Gordon, and Lisa Kaplin. Gregor and Kaplin combined for 28 goals during the 2004-05 campaign.

A tribute to graduated athletes

Every year around late May in the suburb ten miles west of Boston, known as the Watch City, over 800 young men and women depart for bigger and better things. Some will be doctors. Some will be lawyers. Very few, if any, will be professional athletes.

Women’s Hoops

The Brandeis Womens Hoops squad loses the third leading scorer in school history in Danielle Fitzpatrick. Not to mention Jayne Wise. Yet they are expected to surpass their already impressive win total of 22 games from the 03-04 crusade. This is where Emily Malkin and Catherine Brady come in.

Soundtrack of summer

The endless days of basking in the sun on a beautiful beach;

these are the moments that remind people of those glorious months of summer. Yet, Im not one of those people;

I tend to burn whenever I go to the beach. This doesnt bother me at all, because I still enjoy summer as much as the next person. What I love about summer is something I love every day of the year: music. For me, summer provides the ability to see almost any band in concert, discover new bands, and just enjoy it all.
