Jonas takes two at ITA’s

Though most of the Brandeis Mens tennis team took the weekend off, the Judges sent two athletes to compete this Saturday. Sam Jonas 07 and Mike Vulfovich 07 represented Brandeis at this two day tournament located in Williamstown, MA. Jonas was seeded 12th going into the Intercollegiate Tennis Association competition and his teammate was ranked similarly.

Jonas had an excellent showing, winning two matches overall. After easily defeating his first challenger, Jonas was able to down his second opponent in a tie-breaker match. Going into the second day of competition, Jonas was not able to keep his winning streak alive. He was later defeated by the 8th seed of the tournament, a competitor who went on to defeat the favored seed and make it to Sundays semifinals.

Teammate Mike Vulfovich had success in the tournament as well. Vulfovich was able to down his first opponent of the tournament with a win in the tie-breaker. He was unable to defeat his second opponent, however, and later fell to the 11th seeded competitor from Trinity College.

The duo also competed in the doubles part of the tournament. The judges were faced with the top seed of the tournament in their first doubles match and were defeated by their opponents. It was a tight match, and Jonas commented that it was indicative of their improving ability to play doubles together.

Sam Jonas 07 was excited by the performances of both him and his teammate this weekend. We are starting to play much better doubs [doubles] together commented Jonas on the exhibition of Vulfovich and himself. [We] are looking forward to playingin the spring. Jonas went on to explain his own feeling about his individual postings at the competition. The tournament went well, I'm disappointed I didn't go farther especially since I felt like I lost to a player I should have beat but the tennis was some of the highest quality I've played in my college career. He also conveyed his excitement for future competitions. I'm just looking forward to Bowdoin [and] whoever else we have to play.”

The Mens Tennis team will next compete against Bowdoin College home on October 7th. After that they have a few more meets before ending the shorter fall season and preparing for the upcoming spring competitions. Still, their success at their recent tournament is indicative of good things to come for these judges.
