To some, this list is quite impressive, while it might be lackluster to others. Flood victim finds intruder in room next morning
Dustin Smith 08 did not have to deal solely with the flooding of his room on Feb. 13: when he returned to his room the next morning, he said he came home to an unexpected intruder.

Several rooms in Ziv Quad were flooded February 16, according to residents. The flooding occurred after a student broke the head of the fire sprinkler in her room when removing a bag from her closet.
College-Age senate candidate Patrick Schmitt speaks to Brandeis Democrats
Former Rhode Island State Senate candidate and recent college graduate Patrick Schmitt came to the Brandeis Democrats meeting Wednesday night to speak about his campaign for political office. In 2006, as a 22-year-old senior at Georgetown University, Schmitt ran for Rhode Island's 38th District State Senate seat against incumbent Republican Dennis Algiere. Although Schmitt lost the election, he won more than 5,000 votes against the well-known incumbent, who had run unopposed since 1992.
Free Play Theatre Cooperative chartered
The Free Play Theatre Cooperative (FPTC) announced that it had been chartered by the Student Union on Feb. 11. The 19-1 decision came after a sharply-divided Union vote last semester, in which Free Play was narrowly denied charter due to claims of duality of purpose with the Brandeis Ensemble Theatre (BET).
Crown Center fellow under fire for paper
Dr. Khalil Shikaki, a senior fellow at Brandeiss Crown Center for Middle Eastern studies, has recently generated controversy over his support for the release of Marwan Barghouti, a former Fatah leader who was convicted in Israel in 2004 of five counts of murder, as well as one count of attempted murder. Shikaki has been the head of the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research since 2000, and is considered a world expert on the field of Palestinian public opinion.
UPDATE: Long range woes end men’s charmed season
In a fast paced physical match-up filled with high intensity, the Brandeis Judges saw their season come to a close as they lost to the Rhode Island College Anchormen, 70-67 Saturday night in the second round of the Division III NCAA tournament in Providence, RI.
UPDATE: ‘Deis men walk away with OT victory
The Brandeis Judges stepped onto the court, proverbial newborns in NCAA play. Nary a senior among them, they faced a tough foe in the Trinity College Bantams. Under the charged atmosphere, neither team disappointed but in the end, it was the Brandeis Judges that walked away the victor, needing an extra frame to claim the 77-70 victory.
UPDATE: Capra shines as ‘Deis women romp over UMaine-Farmington
The opening game in this year's NCAA Division III tournament seemed to work out perfectly for the lady Judges. Guard Jaime Capra '08 scorched the defense of their first round opponent, the Maine-Farmington Beavers, who came into the game ranked 21st in Division III. Capra posted a career high 33 points in 32 minutes, while shooting a perfect 4-4 from beyond the arc, helping the Judges cruise to a 90-66 victory.
Busy offseason has fans gearing up for opening day
Spring training is well underway and the start of the regular season is only a month away. There are many fascinating stories for the baseball fan to keep an eye on: Will Barry Bonds break Hank Aarons all time home run record? Will the Cubs go from worst to first in the National League Central? What about the World Series Champion Cardinals? Will the $100 million addition to the Red Sox rotation finally get them over the top in the AL East? These are just a few questions to ponder in the upcoming weeks. Lets take a look at the offseason moves for each MLB team:
The long road to the NCAAs
The Brandeis Judges, having long languished in the bottom of the athletic pack in the nineties, barely missed out on their third straight 20 win season, falling to UAA co-division champs New York University 73-79 but picked up something far nicer their second straight NCAA appearance. The good news follows a three game road stretch, picking up wins against Emory (58-51) and Case-Western (74-61) before the NYU match.

As the Brandeis women's basketball team heads off to Emmanuel to take on Maine-Farmington, here are some keys that we at the Hoot feel are necessary for the Judges if they hope to advance deep into the playoffs.
Five fencers awarded UAA Athlete of the Week
Honors for this week's UAA Athlete of the Week goes to five Brandeis fencers, who helped lead their teams to the New England Intercollegiate Fencing championship at MIT this past Sunday. The winners include Kai Keller '07 and Eugene Vortsman '08 for the men's squad, while Chantal Dewey '07, Stefanie Aucoin '08, and Jessica Davis-Heim '07 took home the prize for the women.
Men enter tournament with high expectations
The Brandeis Judges ended their regular season by completing their first ever sweep of their rivals, the New York University Violets. The Judges will ride their strong finish to the season into the Mens Division III NCAA National Championship bracket.
