Brandeis political groups host voter registration drive

Brandeis Democrats hosted a voter registration drive in the library last Friday where students could register to vote in their state and learn about their state’s primary elections. Two a cappella groups, Proscenium and Up the Octave performed at the registration drive. The Brandeis Democrats will be hosting another voter registration drive on April 19.

The Brandeis Democrats hosted the event, but it was co-sponsored by Brandeis Conservatives, Brandeis Pro-Choice and the Media and Politics Leader Scholar Community (LSC). The drive was funded by the Social Justice and Social Policy (SJSP) Brenda Meehan Social-Justice-In-Action grant that the Brandeis Democrats applied for early in the spring semester.

During the drive, anyone stopping by the library could pick up information about their state’s primary elections, research that was overseen by Miriam Berro Krugman ’20, the Brandeis Democrats president as of this year. According to Krugman, about 15 to 20 people attended the drive to register for voting in their state, and others came to get information about primary elections.

Krugman was excited about the a cappella show, “We just thought it would be nice, it would bring people in, it would be a fun environment for people to register to vote in,” she said. Krugman is a member of Up the Octave. The drive also gave out lemonade and cookies to those who came to register.

In co-sponsoring the event with multiple clubs, students hoped to garner attendance from students of all political leanings, according to Krugman. “We thought that co-sponsoring would be great because it increases volunteers, it increases how many people come,” said Krugman. “And if you want to come in and register as a Republican that’s fine, we just want people to register.”

Krugman is hoping the next registration drive on April 19 will be a larger event outdoors.
