Mia Edelstein is one of The Hoot’s editors-in-chief. She began as a copy editor her first semester and has a passion for the Oxford comma. She is a sociology and French major and is on the women’s rugby team.
Julie Landy is one of The Hoot’s editors-in-chief. She began as a copy editor in her first semester and refuses to allow Mia to switch The Hoot over to Oxford comma acceptance. She is a senior majoring in English and business.
Senior Copy Editor
Sarah Terrazano is The Hoot’s senior copy editor (even though she deceptively is a sophomore). She started copy editing her first year on campus and occasionally switches gears to write articles. You can also catch her working behind the desk at the library. Sarah is an English major with intended minors in Hispanic Studies and CAST.
Zach Cihlar is the editor of the Sports section. He has been writing for Sports since his first year and joined the editorial board his sophomore year. Besides working on The Hoot, he plays for the varsity tennis team, gives tours through undergraduate admissions and volunteers for ACEing Autism. He is a sophomore majoring in economics.
Katarina Weessies is the Opinions section editor. She is a junior, majoring in politics and English. She has been writing for The Hoot since her first year at Brandeis. In addition to her work with The Hoot, she is a member of the Brandeis Quiz Bowl Team. She is very opinionated and loves writing about campus activism.
Abigail Gardener is one of two News editors. She is a sophomore majoring in English. She began writing for The Hoot her first semester at Brandeis and became a deputy News editor her second semester. Abigail is also a coordinator for Companions to Elders in the Waltham Group and works as a community partner liaison in the Department of Community Service.
Elianna Spitzer is the other News editor. She began writing for The Hoot her first semester at Brandeis. She is involved in Mock Trial and works at the Hiatt Career Center. Elianna is majoring in politics and American Studies.
Katie Decker-Jacoby is one two Arts editors. She is a sophomore who has not declared a major yet, but will minor in journalism. Katie began writing for The Hoot in the first semester of her sophomore year. She is also the publicity coordinator for Cupcake Obsession Club and a rising co-editor for Archon Yearbook.
Emma Kahn is an Arts editor, a who senior has been writing for the Hoot since her sophomore year. She has always had a passion for writing and for the arts, as well as a deep commitment to community service. She plays five instruments and can often be found at any arts events happening on campus, notebook in hand. Emma is double majoring in anthropology and International and Global Studies.
Charlotte Aaron is the editor of the Features section. She has been writing for The Hoot since her first year when she started as a news writer, had her fun as co-News editor and transitioned to Features this year to do more in-depth articles on topics of student interest. A business major with double minors in journalism and legal studies, Charlotte loves to ask questions and then find the answers.
Karen Caldwell is The Hoot’s photo editor. She has been taking photos for The Hoot since her first semester and moved up to photo editor the beginning of her sophomore year. She is also an undergraduate tutor at the English Language Program, a dedicated member of Brandeis Salseros and can be found working at Chum’s when she’s not dancing in Boston. Karen is majoring in HSSP and International and Global Studies.
Lisa Petrie is the layout editor for The Hoot and has been putting together the physical form of the paper since her first year. She lays out in InDesign, teaches younger members how to use the program and acts as consultant for the other editors in layout matters. She is a senior majoring in French and Francophone Studies and minoring in history. In addition to working for The Hoot, Lisa dances for Adagio and Hooked on Tap and volunteers with TIPS by working in Waltham public schools.
Candace Ng is is The Hoot’s deputy layout editor. She is a first-year intending to major in psychology and minoring in German studies. She joined The Hoot in her first semester at Brandeis and became deputy layout editor her second semester. She also serves on the e-board of Cru Brandeis.
Sarah Jousset was the sports editor at The Hoot and is now studying abroad in Dublin, Ireland. She is a junior, double majoring in Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies and International and Global Studies. She has been the sports editor for three years, being named to the position at the beginning of her first year. She is on Banshee (the women’s Ultimate Frisbee team) and has two jobs on campus.
Matt Kowalyk served as the video editor at The Hoot, but for now is studying at the London School of Economics for his junior year. He made videos reporting on campus events and assisted in livestreaming activities while writing more than a few op-eds. He majors in business and economics, with minors in politics and film studies.
Allison Plotnik was The Hoot’s managing editor and treasurer and is studying abroad in Copenhagen, Denmark. She started at The Hoot as a copy editor. She is a sociology and education studies major and is also the UDR for the sociology department.
Sabrina Pond was The Hoot’s Arts editor and is now abroad in Australia. She has a passion for anything arts related—museums, concerts, a cappella and so much more! She is an environmental studies and psychology major. She is also SEA’s secretary, a TA for ENVS 2A and recently binge watched “The Office” (she knows she’s behind on pop culture).
Hannah Schuster was The Hoot’s News editor and is studying abroad in Paris, France. She began writing for The Hoot her first semester on campus and became News editor her sophomore year. Hannah has also been dancing for many years and is the co-president of the Ballet Club and a member of the Adagio Dance Company. She is majoring in American Studies with a double minor in journalism and French.
Zach Phil Schwartz was The Hoot’s Opinions editor, now studying abroad at The Hague. He began as a copy editor at The Hoot, and quickly moved on to become the paper’s website editor in his second semester at Brandeis. He’s written well over 40 op-eds for the paper but still finds the time to binge watch “The Strain” every other day. He is a double major in International and Global Studies and anthropology, with minors in Italian Studies and politics. He is also one of the Ski and Snowboard Team’s captains and is an Undergraduate Departmental Representative for the Italian Studies program.
Emily Sorkin Smith was a News editor at The Hoot but is currently studying Arabic in Amman, Jordan. She has been writing for the News section since her first year. Emily majors in Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies with minors in Near Eastern and Judaic Studies and Hispanic Studies.
