Brandeis receives grant to renew Al-Quds partnership
Brandeis University recently received a $450,000 grant to continue its partnership with Al-Quds University, sources within the Presidents Office have said. Al-Quds, which is the only Arab university in Jerusalem, has worked with Brandeis since 2003.
LTS replaces WebCT with Latte
A new online course management system called LATTE, or Library and Teaching Technology Environment, will replace WebCT after nearly ten years of use, said sources within the office of Library and Technology Services (LTS). Approximately 200 courses will make use of LATTE during the fall semester.
‘Deis cross country team looks to continue success
Both the Men and Womens cross country teams arrived at Brandeis early to begin training for the upcoming season. After a successful season last fall, both squads are geared up to compete and extend the victories of past years.
Brandeis soccer to face challenges in ’07
At the beginning of the 2007 season, both the Mens and Womens soccer teams have reasons to be optimistic. The Mens side returns as the defending Eastern College Athletic Conference champion, winning the 2006 tournament with a 5-3 victory over New England College. The Womens team, meanwhile, has qualified for the postseason in four consecutive seasons, and in the last two years has advanced to the ECAC quarterfinals.
The summer of shame
This has been one hell of a summer to be a sports fan. And thats not a sentence of praise. It is incredible how the problems with sports are very reminiscent of the wider problems of society in general the divide between the rich and the poor, players and fans, is at an all-time high, and the disconnect feels palpable.
Some advice for first-year students
There are simply a few things that one can only learn through first hand experience at Brandeis University. Brandeis is full of twists and surprises, so without further ado, here are a few tips for first year students from The Hoot editorial board to keep in mind as you enter your first year at our university.
Fishing is a boatload of fun
Your muscles tense the second your line starts to reel itself out. Your rod bends sharply, threatening to break if action is not taken immediately. A giant shimmer in the water several feet under confirms that you have a monster on the other end of your line. How you react within the ensuing moments determines whether your future involves a giant finned sea creature flopping around in your boat or a broken tool. Do you have a net in the boat? What are you going to do once you have this beast in your grips? Lunch? Catch and release?
UJ t-shirt case dismissed
At the end of the Spring 07 semester, the Union Judiciary dismissed a petition filed against Jacob Bockelmann 09 and Brandeis.CampusShirts.net, a student-led screen printing initiative, led by Bockelmann, that has printed shirts for various Brandeis clubs. The complaint cited a conflict of interest due to Bockelmanns previous position as a member of the Finance Board, and that undue pressure was being placed on clubs to use Bockelmanns service.
ICC completes summer renovations
Long-awaited renovations to the Intercultural Center (ICC), proposed last spring by the organizations past director as well as the Student Union, were finally approved and implemented this summer.
