Saying goodbye: the BEMCo perspective

As my time at Brandeis comes to a close, I am constantly reminded of all of the beauty in the community around me. Each semester has thrown its curveballs at all of us, and I am so thankful for my social support around me to get me through the inevitable tough times. This social support has specifically come from the wonderful and caring members of the BEMCoNation. Responding to more than 300 calls each academic year is not easy, and I want to personally thank each and every BEMCo member for supporting me and each other through it all. There really is nothing quite like the bonds made through such a tight-knit and caring organization like BEMCo.

The friendships and memories that have been cultivated through late night Dunkin meals after endless calls, National Collegiate Emergency Medical Services Foundation conferences, crew bonding activities, etc., have taught me so much. BEMCo is full of individuals who care so deeply about the Brandeis community and their fellow students that they sacrifice their own time and energy to respond to that loud and, let’s face it, terrifying sound of the pager at three in the morning. I have made some of my best friends through BEMCo, and I would never trade the bonds I have with my BEMfriends for anything in the world. I have been so lucky to be surrounded by such incredible people for the past three years, and I had the genuine pleasure of serving as director in my senior year.

Being director of BEMCo was both insightful and busy, with each day containing its own joys and challenges. However, I know that I am leaving the organization in the more than capable hands of Carolyn Sabini ’17, and that she will do great things in the coming year. To Carolyn and the rest of BEMCo, I want to share one of the most valuable pieces of advice I ever received from a director of the past: Take a step back and look around you, be inspired by the good work the Corps is doing and trek on. No matter how hard it seems now, it will all be worth it in the end. Granted, it is easier for me to say this on my end of everything, but I promise, everything will work itself out.

When I look back on my time at Brandeis, I think about my 212 calls in my time on BEMCo, and would not want to spend my time here in any other way. I have thoroughly enjoyed working on BEMCo—members of which I now consider my family—and cannot wait to see what the future holds for the BEMCoNation. I am so fortunate and thankful to have had the opportunity to serve on the BEMCo Executive Board and serve the Brandeis community in general. Brandeis, thank you so much for allowing me to help and serve you in the best way I know how. To all of my BEMCo babies, remember to keep your heads up, ask for help when you need it and to take a look at the excellent work done around you. You are all amazing, and inspire me every day. BEMCo #773 out.
