Women’s basketball closes out the 2018-19 season

The women’s basketball team couldn’t hold off Case Western Reserve University on Senior Day for their last home game in the Red Auerbach Arena and lost 67-55 on Feb. 10. The Judges honored four seniors: guard Sarah Jaromin, forward Joelle MarkAnthony, forward Gillian O’Malley and guard Ellery Riccio.

At their last home game of the season, Hannah Nicholson ’21 led the Judges with 13 points and a team-high of nine rebounds. Camila Casanueva ’21 added another nine points and also contributed six rebounds and four assists. MarkAnthony led the seniors with six points off the bench. The Spartans of CWRU held the Judges to just 28.6 percent shooting from the field and 26.1 percent from three-point range.

After the game, Brandeis Associate Head Coach Scott Foulis said, “They’ve all had their own journeys. They’ve each persevered through injuries. A lot happens in a four-year career.” He also said he couldn’t be more proud to get the opportunity to coach them.

After closing out their home season, the Judges finished the regular season with three away games the following week. Over the break, the Judges faced the University of Chicago and Washington University St. Louis. In the Judges’ game against UChicago, three players scored in double figures, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the 23rd ranked Maroons, and Chicago defeated the Judges, 85-68.

Casanueva led the Judges with 21 points, making this her third 20+ point game of the season. Jaromin and Kerry Tanke ’22 also each finished in the double digits with 14 points each. They were also the top rebounders for the Judges, Tanke with seven and Jaromin with six, combining for 13. Casanueva and Jaromin also led the team in assists each with two.

Next, the Judges traveled to Washington University, where they suffered an 89-70 defeat. Again Casanueva led the Judges in scoring and finished with 24 points, 8-12 overall. Casanueva also had eight rebounds and had the team-high four assists and two blocks. Lauren Rubinstein ’20 tied her career-high with 17 points for the Judges, and Tanke led the team in rebounds with 10.

Finally, the Judges faced New York University in their last game of the season on Saturday. Brandeis tried to rally back in the fourth quarter, outscoring NYU 19-14, but it wasn’t enough to beat the Violets, and they lost 64-58. The leading scorers for the Judges were Jaromin and Casanueva, each finishing with 10 points. Casanueva also led the team in rebounds with seven and assists with five. Two other key players for Brandeis were Samira Abdelrehim ’21 and Hannah Nicholson ’20. Abdelrehim added nine points and six rebounds, and Nicholson had eight points and six rebounds.

The women’s basketball team ends their 2018-19 season with a record of 7-17 overall and 3-11 in the UAA.
