Track and field teams kick off outdoor season

Since our last edition of The Hoot, the Brandeis Judges track and field teams have competed in four different meets. On March 29, the Judges attended both the Black & Gold Invitational at Bryant University and the Tufts Snowflake Classic at Tufts. On April 4, the Judges attended the Regis Spring Classic, and on April 5, they attended the Amherst Spring Fling.

 

At Tufts, the women’s team placed 13th out of 20 teams, while the men placed 10th out of 16. Emma Liu ’26 set the school record in the hammer throw with a distance of 45.72 meters. This was almost two meters better than the previous record of 43.84, which was set by Michele Wilson ’02. This record-setting performance was good for second place in the event. Alisha Anderson ’26 had a third-place finish in the pole vault with a vault of 3.40 meters. In the men’s pole vault, Alex Chan ’28 earned second place with a 4.10-meter vault. Cam Peirce ’25 finished fourth in the shot put at 12.57 meters. Michael Laurin ’27 finished sixth in the discus throw with a distance of 37.02 meters. In the javelin throw, Sam Krause ’27 finished in sixth place with a 44.87-meter throw, while Elle Yung ’28 finished 12th with a 39.95-meter throw.

 

At Bryant, the women finished 13th out of 16 teams. Peterly Leroy ’28 finished second in both the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes. Her time of 12.39 seconds in the 100-meter was a personal record (PR), and her time of 25.64 seconds in the 200 was also impressive. Jasmin Berganza ’28 also set a PR in the 100-meter with her 10th-place time of 12.92 seconds. Berganza also placed 11th in the 200-meter with a time of 26.53 seconds. Hailey Crane ’25 placed 17th in the 100 with a time of 13.60 seconds and 25th in the 200 with a time of 28.17 seconds. Kirsten Man ’25 also set a PR in the 100-meter with her time of 13.78 seconds, which was good for 19th place. Man also finished 16th in the long jump with a 4.70-meter jump. Natalie Liapis ’27 finished fourth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:08.43. In the 1500-meter, Ella Warkentine ’26 placed 20th and set a PR with a time of 4:55.95. In the 5000-meter, three different Judges set PRs. Kyra Au ’25 finished in 12th with a time of 18:10.44. Zada Forde ’25 finished 18th with a time of 18:33.17, and Shayna Zavell ’27 finished 24th with a time of 19:13.91.

 

The men’s team finished at Bryant in 14th place out of 16 teams. Adam Rieden ’26 finished the 800-meter run with a 22nd-place time of 2:04.51. James Waters ’28 finished in 27th with a time of 2:04.51, and Daniel Willis ’27 finished in 32nd with a time of 2:14.64. In the 400-meter run, Sam Rosen ’27 finished in 13th with a time of 54.05 and Jaiden Banton ’28 finished 16th with a time of 56.33. Henry Nguyen (GRAD) finished the 5000-meter with a PR of 15:30.97, good for 30th place. Dylan Zhao ’26 set a PR and placed 43rd in the 1500-meter with a time of 4:17.52. Dylan Whalen ’25 also set a PR with his 57th-place time of 4:33.84. Danny Krigman ’25 finished 14th in the 100-meter with a time of 11.32 seconds. Eli Wawersik ’28 placed 11th in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 59.60. In the 110-meter hurdles, TJ Showstead ’26 placed 17th with a time of 17.68 seconds. The 4×100 relay team of Krigman, Matthew Yue ’26, Jordan Colon ’25 and Rosen finished in sixth place with a time of 43.95 seconds. Yue also placed fifth in the long jump with a 6.27-meter jump, while Wawersik finished in seventh and set a PR with a 6.06-meter jump. 

 

At the Regis Spring Classic, the women’s team placed seventh out of 17 teams. In the 200-meter dash, Leroy finished in second place with a time of 25.65 seconds. Sarai Sealy ’28 finished in third with a time of 25.72, while Berganza finished fourth with a time of 26.60 seconds. Hannah Bohbot-Dridi ’25 won the 400-meter hurdles and set a PR with her time of 1:06.04. Liapis finished second with a time of 1:07.69. The 4×100 relay team of Leroy, Sealy, Bohbot-Dridi and Berganza also finished in first place with a time of 48.30 seconds. 

 

The men’s team placed 11th out of 15 teams. For the men’s team, Yue set a PR and finished in seventh place in the 200-meter with his time of 23.06 seconds. Krigman finished 12th in the 200 with a time of 23.33 seconds. Wawersik won the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 56.60 seconds, a new PR. The men’s 4×100 relay team of Colon, Yue, Krigman and Wawersik came in first place with a time of 43.94 seconds. 

 

In Amherst, Leroy finished the 100-meter dash in second place with a time of 12.53 seconds. Sealy set a PR with her third-place time of 12.86 seconds. Berganza finished fourth with a time of 12.99 and Crane finished in ninth with a time of 13.68. In the 200-meter, Crane finished in 12th with a time of 28.62 seconds, while Ifigenia Oxyzolou ’26 finished 16th with a PR time of 30.77 seconds. Oxyzolou also set a PR in the 400-meter, where she finished 22nd with a time of 1:10.64. Au set a personal best in the 800-meter with a time of 2:37.31. Liapis finished in second place in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:07.69. Sophie Segal ’27 finished in fifth place in the high jump with a 1.52-meter jump, while Man jumped 1.42 meters to finish 10th. Sealy won the long jump with a PR-setting 5.42-meter jump. Man finished 11th with a 4.68-meter jump. Crane placed 23rd in the shot put with a 7.66-meter throw. Kate Hurlbert ’25 finished 16th in the discus with a 24.47-meter throw. Liu placed fourth in the hammer throw with a 44.50-meter throw. Hurlbert also participated in the hammer throw, finishing 17th with a 30.55-meter throw. 

 

Multiple Judges competed in the 1500-meter. Sadie Harrow ’27 finished 18th and set a PR with her time of 4:59.32. Anna Batelli ’25 also set a PR with her time of 5:04.52, good for 25th place. Au finished in 27th with a time of 5:50.60, while Forde finished in 28th with a time of 5:05.75. Zavell finished in 36th and set a PR with her time of 5:20.68. Calli Morvay ’26 also set a PR with her 37th-place time of 5:38.72.

 

For the men’s team in Amherst, Krigman placed 10th with a time of 11.58 seconds. Banton set a PR in the 200-meter, placing 15th with a time of 23.95 seconds. Garret Rieden ’26 won the 400-meter and set a PR with his time of 48.63 seconds. In the 800-meter, five different Judges competed. Nguyen placed 20th with a time of 2:04.68. Zhao finished in 23rd with a time of 2:08.24. Whalen finished 24th with a time of 2:09.45. Ben Katsev ’28 finished in 26th and set a PR of 2:10.82. Willis finished 27th with a time of 2:16.08. Lucas Dia ’25 finished 11th in the 5000-meter with a time of 15:48.15, good for a PR. The 4×400 team of Garret Rieden, TJ Carleo ’26, Adam Rieden and Rosen finished in third with a time of 3:33.14. 

In the 1500-meter, the men’s team had seven different competitors. Carleo finished in sixth place with a time of 3:58.71. Nguyen finished 24th with a time of 4:10.77. Zhao finished in 33rd with a time of 4:20.43, while Katsev finished 34th and set a PR with his time of 4:22.53. Spencer Lee ’25 placed 39th with a time of 4:30.17. Erik Lopez ’25 set a PR with his 41st-place time of 4:31.91. Aidan Shames ’28 placed 43rd and set a PR of his own with his time of 4:36.80. 

 

Krause finished second in javelin with a throw of 51.89 meters. Chan set a PR of 40.03 meters in a 10th-place performance, while Showstead finished 12th with a 37.38-meter throw and Yung finished 13th with a 35.99-meter throw. Wawersik reached 1.78 meters in the high jump to place ninth. Chan finished eighth in the pole vault with a clearance of 3.85 meters. In the long jump, Yue finished seventh with a 5.98-meter jump, while Lin Lin Hutchinson ’25 finished 19th with a 5.46-meter performance. Laurin finished 12th in the shot put with a 12.15-meter throw. Krause threw for 11.18 meters and finished 18th. Showstead placed 29th with a 10.09-meter throw, while Caleb Sharif ’26 threw 9.90 meters to finish 30th. In the discus, Laurin finished 12th with a 34.17-meter throw. Sharif finished 15th with a 33.44-meter throw. Asher Gresen ’28 threw for 30.87 meters, good for 24th place and a PR. Showstead finished in 27th with a 28.83 meter throw. Kevin Wright ’27 finished 35th with a 23.99-meter throw. In the hammer throw, Wright placed 22nd with a 35.84-meter throw, while Gresen finished 30th with a PR of 23.98 meters. 

 

The Judges will compete in the Carla Coffey Invitational at Smith College and the Silfen Invitational at Connecticut College on April 11 and 12. They will then travel to California to participate in the Bryan Clay Invitational on April 17 and the Pacific Coast Invitational on April 18. The Judges will return to Massachusetts for the MIT Sean Collier Invitational on April 19.
