The Brandeis men suffered a setback last weekend as their road woes continued, starting with a loss to then number 10-ranked Washington University 64-68 before being drubbed out of Chicago 74-88.
The Judges' defeat at the hands of the Maroons saw five players reach double digits in points, but the grave was dug quickly and very deep as Chicago was simply deadly from the field and the first half ended with the Judges down 24-46. A 52 point second half came too late to repair the damage done.
Leading the scoring was Andre Roberson 10 with 14 points, while classmate Kenny Small 10 had 13.
Andre is a natural point guard, hes got really good leadership skills, Coach Brian Meehan stated. He understands the game. He can be out on the floor and see where mismatches are, he has a feel for plays in what we should run in certain situations in order to be effective and hes an excellent defender on the ball.
As for Small, Kenny is just a really talented scorer. He just knows how to score, he knows how to put the ball into the basket.
Joe Coppens 08 provided 11 of his own while Steve DeLuca 08 and Terrell Hollins 10 each had 10. Hollins also had a team high six rebounds in the game. Kwame Graves-Fulgham 08 led the team with six assists for the game.
The loss comes shortly after a disappointing loss to Washington University that saw DeLuca score his 1,000th career point. Unfortunately, it was to no avail, as the Bears walked away from the tight affair with the victory. The game featured several lead changes with neither team reaching a double digit lead until there was under a minute left in the game.
DeLuca had 11 points and a team-leading 11 rebounds in the game. Coppens led Brandeis in scoring with 17 points while forward Stephen Hill 08 had 12 points.
So what is it that ails the Judges? According to Coach Meehan, its the offense in general. Offensively, weve struggled a bit in the second semester. We really havent gotten back to shooting the ball the way we did in the first semester, he stated. Overall, were a little disappointed that we havent finished games on the road because we really need to be able to do that, but its part of the process that we started three years ago.
Brandeis will get a chance to correct the ship this weekend as they take on Chicago tonight at 8 p.m. followed by Washington Sunday at noon.
