Clinton to speak in December

The University announced Monday via a campus-wide e-mail that former President William Jefferson Clinton will deliver the inaugural speech of the newly-created Eli J. Segal Citizen Leadership Program on Dec. 3. Segal, who had acted as Clintons campaign manager in 1992, passed away in 2006 from asbestos-related cancer.

Students plan trip to MidEast following Carter challenge

After several earlier attempts, a group of students have convened to organize a delegation to the West Bank following the Jan. 23 visit of former President Jimmy Carter. When Carter discussed his controversial book Palestine Peace Not Apartheid, he challenged students to visit the occupied territories for a few days to determine whether I have exaggerated or incorrectly described the plight of the Palestinians.

X-Country bounces back in New York

The weather was great and the scenery was perfect as the Judges traveled to upstate New York this Saturday to compete at the Albany Invitational. Both squads were able to have some of their best performances of the season, as many runners earned personal records and high rankings at the meet. This successful meet comes after a number of lackluster performances by the Judges during the middle of their seasons.

Southeast Asia club organizes Burma vigil

The Southeast Asia Club (SEAC) hosted a vigil at the Peace Circle Friday in honor of the ongoing protest in Myanmar (formerly Burma) against the military regime. Between 15 and 20 students participated in the event.

One of the student leaders in the 1988 pro-democracy uprising, who, for security reasons, wished to be known as Aung, spoke, followed by a moment of silence for those who died or are currently protesting in Myanmar.

German ambassador discusses European social climate

In honor of the 10th annivery of the Center for German and European Studies (CGES), the department sponsored a program this week on Muslim integration in Europe.

The discussion on Wednesday afternoon included a wide range of Brandeis community members. Klaus Schariott, the German ambassador to the United States provided the keynote address and a discussion panel followed. Attendees were able to ask questions of both the ambassador and the members of the panel on the current situation of Muslims in Europe.
