This election season, remembering what really matters
When a man goes to sit on the toilet to do number two (I am not willing to admit that women defecate like men do), it is inherently assumed that this will be a time of solitude, contemplation, and complete and utter quiet. Yes he is here because nature has issued it inevitable call, but the real reason he is here is to ponder the true meaning of life. He is here to sift and sort through the depths of existance.
Brandeis prepares for accreditation process
Brandeis is currently in the process of re-accreditation. In order to assess each institution based on its own progress and in comparison to other institutes of higher education, assure the public of quality and give institutions a chance to self assess and improve, re-accreditation is conducted by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) every ten years.
Vandalism in East Quad
This weekend Hassenfeld Hall in East Quad was affected by several acts of vandalism. Many Hassenfeld residentsparticularly those on the fourth and sixth floors, where the vandalism took placeare distraught by the vandalism. Some of the more dramatic acts of vandalism included the writing of vulgarities on a Community Advisors (CA) dry erase board, and the theft of a computer from an unlocked room on Hassenfeld 4.
Coffee referendum to be voted on by November
There will be a formal petition to gauge undergraduate student support for completely replacing regular coffee with coffee grown under conditions in which those growing it receive a living wage, announced Union President Jenny Feinberg 07 in response to last weeks Hoot editorial decrying the use of a previous poll as official support from the students.
Dean Adams brings new life to campus diversity initiatives
Jamele Adams has officially taken up residence in his new home in the office of student life. As the new Assistant Dean of Student Life for the Support of Diversity, replacing Nathaniel Mays, Dean Adams describes his role on campus as two-fold. As an Assistant Dean, he is here for the maintenance of operations;
making sure Brandeis University is meeting the expectations of the students and that the students are meeting the expectations of Brandeis.
Athletics calls crew team a club
We had a new AD [Athletic Director] take over last year, and she examined our entire structure, said Tom Rand, the Assistant Athletic Director for Clubs, IM, and Recreation Sports. The way its set up is that the student clubs are funded by the Student Union. The crew team was the only [club sport] getting money from the athletic department.
Parity agreed to for Brandeis workers
After months of negotiation between the administration and the Service Employees International Union Local 615, direct workers and contracted workers will receive the same pay. The old contract expires in August 2006.
ITS and Library merge into LTS
Information Technology Services (ITS) and the University Libraries have combined to become a new university organization, Library and Technology Services (LTS).
A tribute to NHL retirees
In the last month, three great players retired from professional hockey. Star Defender Al MacInnis, Defender Scott Stevens, Center Ron Francis, and Center Mark Messier all hung up their skates. MacInnis, Francis, and Messier will probably reach the Hall of Fame when they are eligible.

Baseball
On September 14th, Roger Clemens mother Bess died after a long battle with emphysema. Roger decided to dedicate his start later that night to his mother. He gave up one run in six and a third innings pitched and got the win. His team rallied after he left to win the game 10-2. Clemens had hoped his mother would live to see him inducted into the hall of fame, and that had been a factor in thinking about retirement.
WSoccer settles for 2-2 tie with Springfield
On a day when one of their own was honored for her offensive achievements, the Brandeis Womens soccer team left it up to the defense to pull out a tough 2 -1 victory over Wellesley on Tuesday.
Msoccer not discouraged by two tough defeats
2-0 is an unlucky score for the Judges. After beginning the year with a 4-0 record, Brandeis has lost two games this week, both by the score of 2-0. Brandeis currently has a 4-2 record.
Judges swing into action
One of the most discussed aspects of this years Brandeis golf team during their preseason was the mix of talented youth and upperclassmen leadership that has the potential to result in one of the best seasons in school history. The teams showing at the first Little Four Quad Meet of the season at the George Wright Golf Club in Hyde Park, Massachusetts, proved that the predictions are right on track.
Judges hold serve at home, win
One week ago, the Judges lost a tough match to Emmanuel after taking the first two games. This time around, Brandeis made sure there were no such comebacks.
Strong start for cross country
Before a summary of Cross-country, a brief primer: For the uninitiated, mens collegiate cross-country races are typically about 8km long, or five miles and the womens races last around 5 km, or approximately 3 miles. For our readers education, we will include per/mile times for our top runners so that the Brandeis community can more accurately appreciate how fast these athletes run.
NFL week two recap: Pats, Falcons lose
This week was full of only two types of games: closely contested battles and a few high-scoring blow-outs. The New England Patriots suffered their first loss of the season to the Carolina Panthers in one of those close games, only their third in their last 36 games. New England started off strong with a nice drive down the field ending with a Tom Brady touchdown, but things went downhill from there as the Panthers came back with the help of running back Stephen Davis who managed three touchdowns on the ground to lead the Panthers to a 27-17 victory. The Patriots wont have time to lick their wounds, as they go on to face the intimidating and, recently, rival Pittsburgh Steelers.
New infusion of talent could propel 05 Golf
Despite a rocky conclusion to the 2004 campaign, the Brandeis Golf Team is well equipped for a potentially great season. ON YOUR MARKS: Friedman part of Brady’s bunch
When the defending NFL champion New England Patriots took the field last night, officially starting the NFL season, they were led by quarterback Tom Brady, a graduate of the University of Michigan. Brady is the most recent U of M alum who has found success in the NFL, but the first in this succession of players is also fresh in the minds of football fans. Benny Friedman, the original great quarterback, was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio this summer, and while like Brady he played his collegiate ball in Ann Arbor, around Waltham, he is best known as athletic director and former head coach of the now defunct Brandeis University football team.
