The week in sports

Football
Ahman Green will miss the rest of the season with a torn thigh tendon.
Long-time New York Giants Co-Owner Wellington Mara died earlier this week of cancer. Mara had been involved with the organization since he was 9, when his father bought the team. Five years later, Mara and his brother Jack became co-owners of the team. While Jack relinquished his share to his son, who then sold his share in 1991 to Robert Tisch, Wellington has been co-owner since he was 14.

Mara was well known for favoring the leagues interests over his own teams. In the 1960s, he helped the league reach an agreement to split television revenues, a decision that helped the league flourish. He has been a key man on several NFL committees.

Mara was also well liked by the players. He went to many practices and almost every single game. He helped ill former players find doctors and pay medical bills. Many former players were on the payroll as scouts and advisors.

In the final game of Maras life, Eli Manning threw a touchdown to long-time Giant Amani Toomer with five seconds left to win the game. Mara was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1997.

Basketball
Celtics guard Tony Allen has been charged with aggravated battery for his involvement in a fight that turned into a shooting at a diner in Chicago back in August.

Clippers guard Shaun Livingston will miss the first month of the season with an injured back.

Jamal Magloire was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks in exchange for Derek Mason.

College Football
Oregon Quarterback Kellen Clemens will miss the rest of the season with a broken fibula and will fall 50 yards short of the Oregon career passing record.
