Brandeis Fencing fares well in NCAAs

Brandeis is on the national Division I sports scene, albeit a lesser known one. Three male fencers, Eugene Vortsman 08, Will Friedman 09, and Jeremy Simpson 06, made their mark in Houston, TX last weekend.

Of the three, Vortsman had the strongest performance, using 10 bout victories to finish 15th overall in the mens foil. Rookie Will Friedman managed to win six bouts and finished 22nd in that event. Jeremy Simpson, in his last career fencing match, had a disappointing end to a great career, finishing 24th in the mens saber division with one win to his name.

After the two days, Brandeis dropped two spots from 19th to 21st out of 29 colleges competing.

Among the Division III schools competing in the tournament, Brandeis was third behind NYU (14th) and MIT (20th). Brandeis also finished fourth among the New England Schools, with national champion Harvard, Yale (16th) and MIT finishing ahead. Because 16 of the 17 wins came in the foil, Brandeis finished 7th overall in that event.
