Brandeis baseball is off to a strong, if inconsistent, start with a 5-3 record after eight games played. The keys for the Judges have been strong hitting to take the lead and dominant to pitching to at the very least keep the team in the games. The beginning has suggested inconsistency in which Brandeis would beat Case-Western 13-3 only to fall the next day to Washington University 5-3.
Leading the way on offense has been shortstop Zach Golden 06 and golden he has been, batting a blistering .469, going 15-32 at the plate. Catcher Phil Aurigemma 06 has been nearly as powerful, batting .412 (10 for 24). He is also tied for second in runs batted in with 7 so far.
Outfielder Chuck Sheehan 08 has been having a strong start in his second year of college ball, batting .333 with 7. Providing the power has been outfielder and catcher Jonathon Winston 07, with 3 home runs and a solid .296 batting average.
While the hitters have been good, the pitchers have been sparkling;
the most runs coughed up so far was five. Tim Dunphy 06 leads the way on the mound with a 2.35 earned run average, surrendering only 13 hits in 15.1 innings pitched.
Craig Letendre 08 has been nothing short of dominating on the mound, with a team-leading 13 strike outs, a 1.64 ERA and a complete game under his belt. However, Letendre only has one loss to show for his effort. In the bullpen, Aaron Landes 06 has shown that he can be trusted with any lead, having allowed no runs and only 5 hits to go with 5 strike outs in 4.1 innings pitched.
Its a team that is off to a strong start;
if the bats can keep going and the pitching keeps Brandeis in the match, then it can be safe to say that the only opponent that can beat Brandeis is Brandeis itself.
