Brandeis Mens Tennis is on a roll.
After upsetting formerly 9th ranked Wheaton 6-1, Brandeis carried that momentum to Babson, winning easily, 6-1. This is its sixth straight victory since its match against Middlebury back on the 11th.
The match started off inauspiciously in the first doubles match, as Babsons Jeremy Stein/Jason Lynn defeated Sam Jonas 07/Jordan Beiber 07 8-5. Brandeis rallied though, as the combos of Michael Vulfovich 07/Scott Schulman 09 and Chris Hersel 06/Cliff Silverman 07 defeated their opponents 8-3 and 8-6 respectively to gain the doubles point.
Brandeis put it away in the singles matches as Vulfovich won easily in the number two match 6-2, 6-3, Beiber took the number three match 6-1, 6-4 and Schulman clinched the win in fourth match 6-0, 6-1. Cliff Silverman, back after sitting out against Wheaton to fix his serve, played in the fifth match and won easily (6-2, 6-1), as did Chris Hersel 06 in the sixth match, sweeping his opponent 6-0, 6-0. The lone loss came in the first match, as Sam Jonas took the first set 6-0, dropped the second set 2-6 and retired from the last set, giving victory to his opponent, Jeremy Stein.
This victory comes six days after their stunning upset of Wheaton at home. Michael Vulfovich had an exceptionally stunning performance, taking the number two match 6-3, 6-2, and this was while he was suffering with a fever of 103.
The court is spinning were the first words he addressed after the match before going into a coughing fit. He recovered quickly though to address whether it was wise for him to be playing in such a state. The only things that have stopped me in the past have been broken ankles and thats about it. If somethings not broken, Ill be on the court.
Having taken two of three doubles matches to claim the doubles point, victories by Jordan Beiber in the third set and Hart Comess-Daniels 06 in the fifth set clinched the upset for Brandeis. Scott Schulman won in the fourth set in his first match in the number four spot. Sam Jonas had the lone loss to Payum Payim, who rallied from 4-0 to defeat Jonas 6-4, 6-2.
Its the next step in the set of goals that we set out for ourselves, Coach Ben Lamanna said after the Wheaton game. Ive known that this group is capable of beating this team, a team like this. Were a team that should be a top-ten in the east for sure, without a doubt. Were doing the right things, the necessary things to get to the next level.
Brandeis Mens Tennis continues its road trip, then returns home to face NYU April 8 at 1:00 p.m.
