Not since Elizbeth Berkley iced her nipples to pointy perfection in the campy classic Showgirls have “Saved by the Bell” alums created such a stir on the pop culture landscape. Now, not one, but two Bayside graduates are involved in separate, but in my opinion equally offensive, controversies.

Wisdom in shades of grey

Out in the far-western Pacific lies a young nation of widely-scattered islands and coral atolls called the Federated States of Micronesia. It covers an area of ocean as large as the United States, but its total land area is no bigger than Rhode Island. Among the hundreds of flat, ring-shaped atolls are Pingelap and Mokil (Mwoakilloa)… These islands have been of interest to geneticists because of the occurrence of a distinct form of total colorblindness, or achromatopsia, among their small populations…

What movie do you want to see?

The end of summer marks the end of the summer blockbusters, and ushers in a whole new crop of movies. This fall, films will be hitting our local Loew's that range from Sundance favorites and cartoon classics to serious Oscar contenders. Okay, I know. I should probably be ashamed to admit that I read books from the genre known as “chick lit.” These books are supposedly predictable, boring, and too girly. But, I love them and I know most of you out there do too!

Manginah releases third album

Manginah is back with its hottest, latest CD, Yo backwards. The CD, directed by Ari Fleisher and Yuval Brokman, came out this summer, and it is the groups third album, following Songs from a World Tour of the East Coast (2001) and the inaugural Manginah (1997).

Activist Bornstein visits 'Deis

The first of two public appearances at Brandeis by Kate Bornstein, transgendered author, performer, and activist, occurred Wednesday night in the Sherman Function Hall. In addition to Wednesdays performance, Kate will also host a more informal chat about sex in the Shapiro Atrium on Friday and will speak in multiple classes. I was fortunate enough to see Kate from three very different angles: a theorist, a performer, and a classmate.

Conservative magazine bashes Brandeis TLCs

Last month, the conservative magazine the National Review Online (NRO) posted an online column denouncing themed housing at universities, specifically citing Brandeis Thematic Learning Communities (TLCs).

Back Pages plans dorm deliveries

After several bags of books delivered to Brandeis were stolen last month, independent bookstore Back Pages Books is taking steps to prevent future theft, according to store owner Alex Green 04.

Undergraduate Research Program finds new funding

The Office of Undergraduate Academic Affairs (UAA) plans to reinstate the Undergraduate Research Program (URP) in the Spring 2007 semester, after it was suspended this fall due to a lack of funding, according to Michele Rosenthal, Associate Dean for Undergraduate Academic Affairs and First Year Services. The UAA also plans to hire a full-time Assistant Dean for Scholarships and Fellowships.

MSoccer stuns MIT then falls to Case

All looked lost for the Judges on the road at MIT and down 3-0 after halftime. However, demonstrating the heart and spirit that Coach Mike Coven always mentions when talking about his players, Brandeis scored four unanswered goals and stunned the Engineers 4-3. Notching a hat trick in the effort was offensive dynamo Ben Premo 09. The rookies also played a vital role in the turnaround.

WSoccer’s undefeated streak ends

All good things must come to an end, but I can certainly bet the womens soccer team agrees that there are better ways to go than losing 3-1 to non-conference rivals Tufts on Wednesday.

Jasak, Gordon named to Team of the Week

Brandeis womens soccer was honored as two players, Melissa Gordon 07 and Sarah Jasak 08 were selected as members of D3kicks.com Team of the Week with over a month of the season covered.

Jonas takes two at ITA’s

Though most of the Brandeis Mens tennis team took the weekend off, the Judges sent two athletes to compete this Saturday. Sam Jonas 07 and Mike Vulfovich 07 represented Brandeis at this two day tournament located in Williamstown, MA. Jonas was seeded 12th going into the Intercollegiate Tennis Association competition and his teammate was ranked similarly.

Volleyball comes up dry

Brandeis volleyball's struggles continued last weekend as in their first UAA Round Robin, the Judges fell hard: dropping the first match to Rochester 2-3. They were then swept out with losses to Emory (1-3) and Carnegie-Mellon (0-3).
