Men’s X-country shares 2nd, women take 5th at UAAs

After a long season of wins and personal records, the mens and womens cross country teams finished out their regular seasons last weekend with the UAA Championships at Washington University. The women were able to place fifth of the eight teams present at the competition while the men took second place, tied with host Washington University with 86 points. Tim Condon 08 earned second-team all-association honors and just missed first team by one spot. Co-captain of the womens team Camille Stevens-Rumann 07 placed 12th in her six kilometer race, earning her all-association citations.

The first finisher on the womens team was Stevens-Rumann, who crossed the line with a time of 23:16. Right behind were Emily Terrin 08 and Katy Agule 09 taking 22nd and 23rd respectively, with times of just over 24 minutes. Co-captain Mary Schillinger 07 was close by with a time of 24:12 seconds and teammate Rebecca Happnie 09 was able to finish off the Brandeis scorers in 44th. Co-captain Megan Bigscelia 07 was unable to compete at this competition, but the Judges were able to fill in the gaps for a strong showing and fifth place.

The men scored their best UAA performance since 1988 with a second place tie with Washington University. Condon was first among the Brandeis runners, placing seventh overall with a time of 25 minutes and 44 seconds, earning second-team all association honors. Behind him came Brandeis runners Jon Guilinger 08 and Joel Sunshine 07, who placed 16th and 17th respectively. Both narrowly missed gaining all-association honors themselves. Matt Jennings 09 also ran in the top 25 and rookie Brian McDonald 10 finished off the Brandeis scorers with a time of 26:34 seconds, just seconds away from winning the Rookie of the Year citation.

The teams were very excited about their recent performances in St. Louis. Danny Glass 07, who couldnt be at the meet, was very happy with the performance of his teammates. I have been on the team for three and a half years, said Glass, and I have never been more proud of the team than after this weekends competition. Several of the competitors expressed excitement about the upcoming winter and spring track seasons. The meet was a good sign of us moving forward, said Mike Stone 09, who came in 6th among the Judges, but we are still focusing on this season.

The Judges have their regional competition next weekend before closing out the season. The indoor track season, in which all of these athletes compete, will begin in early December. Their recent performances are testaments to their hard work all season and an indication of success in the upcoming seasons.
