Futile Ramblings: Refereeing IM sports
For those of you who are interested in my well being, I separated my shoulder last week during my team’s final flag football game. Now you are probably saying to yourself, who in God’s earth separates his shoulder playing flag football, this guy must be a huge loser. While you would probably be accurate in […]
Administration accepts SE proposal
A proposal submitted by Student Events to give the group control of 17 percent of the Student Activities Fee was accepted by the administration Monday, sources say. The administrations decision came despite heated opposition from members of the Student Union Executive Board.
We are really happy that they accepted it because it shows that they are supporting a really forward movement in social life at Brandeis, said Student Events President Lauren Barish 08. They are supportive of Student Events trying to make a change that is going to make the social life even better on this campus.
Ziv sprinkler concerns go unanswered
A Union senator’s concerns regarding sprinkler sensitivity have gone unanswered by the administration, sources say. “The concern about the sprinklers is that they are too sensitive to touch,” said Ziv Quad senator Justin Sulsky ’09. Sulsky said he became involved after his suite was flooded at the beginning of the semester when a student accidentally […]

In an effort to decrease non-renewable energy usage, Yuki Hasegawa, Senator for the Class of 2009, approached Union President Shreeya Sinha ’09 and Director of Union Affairs Jason Gray ‘10, to propose implementing solar panels on campus. He said in his Nov. 18 Project Report, “I had a chat with all these individuals to discuss […]
Women’s Basketball falls to Tufts, bounces back vs. Emmanuel
When one thinks of football in London’s Wembley Stadium, it is usually in the context of Manchester United playing Chelsea for the English Premier League title. However, a few weeks back, it was American football being displayed on the field at England’s largest stadium, as the New York Giants and Miami Dolphins slogged their way […]
Brandeis Labor Coalition: ‘Criminal Records Information System is in need of reform’
Do the letters CORI mean anything to you? You may already have some idea of what Brandeis’ policies on hiring university workers are based upon the workers you see around you every day, in the dining halls and in your dorm. Brandeis hires its workers from the local Waltham community, and has demonstrated a commitment […]

Aramark is currently discussing changes that will be made to Sherman Dining hall and other dining operations. These changes will be in place after this year’s winter break. “In an effort to improve the Dining program we continuously make changes to all our Dining operations,” explained Dining Director Michael Newmark. He continued, “The winter break […]
London Calling?
When one thinks of football in London’s Wembley Stadium, it is usually in the context of Manchester United playing Chelsea for the English Premier League title. However, a few weeks back, it was American football being displayed on the field at England’s largest stadium, as the New York Giants and Miami Dolphins slogged their way […]

Shopping for Truth: Clearing up confusion
First off, I’d like to say thank you to Matt Lawrence and Robert Held for taking the time to read my article “Give the Police a Chance” (November 9) and taking the time to respond to it. It’s nice to know that not just my family and friends read my column. Who would have known […]
Sexiled: Come quietly
I could tell you how many ceilings tiles laid above our heads. I could tell you the pattern. I could count the number of minutes and seconds in each moment – what felt like hours was actually no more than two minutes. One hundred and twenty seconds. Do you think that’s enough time to make […]
One Tall Voice: Appreciating Malcolm X
Over Thanksgiving break, Senior Vice President for Students and Enrollment Jean Eddy accepted a proposal from Student Events that would allow the organization to spend its share of the Student Activities Fee without reporting to the Student Union Financial Board. Instead, the accepted proposal has SE trading its F-board oversight for input from the Department […]
The Point: Get over yourself, Brandeis
College students really, really love themselves. Arrogance, in various forms, seems to be the defining characteristic of many of my peers here at Brandeis. It’s everywhere: from the morons who brag about their S.A.T. scores to the a capella groups who re-arrange “Seasons of Love” to include arduously wacky inside jokes about their senior members. […]
The Gold Standard: Student Events makes a devil’s bargain
Student Events has a number of fantastic projects going on at any given time. Shortly before the break, I had the pleasure of attending one of these, an SE forum involving free food from Taqueria Mexico. I love Taqueria. At this well-attended gathering, I became involved in a discussion of SE’s new finance structure. I […]
Fighting with Pinpricks: A nod to the bandleader
My political education began in earnest at the age of five when I watched Casablanca in the basement of my childhood home. This week marks the 65th anniversary of that film and so it is as good a time as any to declaim for the readers of The Hoot my enduring love for this brilliant […]
Book of Matthew: Why I didn't fall for Ron Paul
I must admit that Congressman Ron Paul could not have picked a better time to launch a libertarian presidential campaign. We as a nation are dealing with an enormous budget deficit, skyrocketing oil prices, increased foreign competition, and a weak economy overall. Paul’s solution appears to be simple and painless: cut spending, cut taxes, cut […]
Letters to the Editor:
(In response to “Student Senate resolution”) Dear Editor, Last week’s Hoot featured an article about the failed Student Senate resolution demanding more transparency and inclusivity of students from the Brandeis administration, especially when dealing with sensitive topics. In said article, senator Justin Sulsky is quoted as saying that the resolution was really about guns. This […]
Editorial: Student Events and administration set dangerous precedent
Over Thanksgiving break, Senior Vice President for Students and Enrollment Jean Eddy accepted a proposal from Student Events that would allow the organization to spend its share of the Student Activities Fee without reporting to the Student Union Financial Board. Instead, the accepted proposal has SE trading its F-board oversight for input from the Department […]
TYP students experience problems with Clinton ticket registration
Transitional Year Program students experienced problems registering for Monday’s speech by former President Bill Clinton. Clinton is scheduled as the inaugural speaker for the Eli J. Segal Citizen Leadership Program. Because the speech is held in the main area of the Gosman Gymnasium, students were told by the administration that “everyone who registers will receive […]

Tuesday evening a forum was held to discuss gun policy on campus. About 20 students, including Student Union representatives, attended. The forum, according to Sferlazzo, was intended […]
