Brandeis women’s soccer picked up their first UAA win of the season, pummeling 22 shots and picked up four unanswered goals in the 4-0 victory over Case Western. After a scoreless first half, Taryn Martiniello ’11 sent a corner kick that slipped through the hands of Spartans goalie Kirsten McClain to open the scoring.
Rookie Izabella Miranda ’12 converted on a wide open attempt set up by Alana Torre’s ’12 cross field pass eight minutes later to double the lead. Leading scorer Tiffany Pacheco ’11 picked up her eighth goal of the season on a 25 yard blast and rookie Ali Theodore ’12 scored her first collegiate goal converting on a play set up by Melissa Gorenkoff ’10. Hillary Rozenzweig ’10 had three saves in the match.The home victory snaps a two game skid for Coach Denise Dallamora’s squad, starting with a 1-5 drubbing in their UAA opener at the hands of host, then 14th ranked Rochester. Melissa Gorenkoff’s unassisted tally in the 78th minute prevented the shut out. The Judges followed with a heart breaking home loss against then number 19th ranked Tufts as Jumbo forward Ali Maxwell scored the game winner at the 86th minute. Hillary Rosenzweig kept the Judges in the match with 10 saves but Brandeis could only muster three shots on goal that Tufts goalie Kate Minnehan needed to stop. The Judges are now 7-4-1 (1-1-0 UAA record) as they hit the road, taking on Chicago tonight and then continue the road swing to Washington University on October 19 and then return home to take on Bowdoin on October 23rd at 7 pm.
On the men’s team, Mike Coven’s squad broke a four game losing skid last Saturday, but extended their scoreless drought to three games as 110 minutes of soccer could not resolve a 0-0 draw to visiting Case Western Reserve University.
Making his second collegiate start of his career, Matt Lynch ’11 faced down 16 shots and made eight saves to keep the tie.The Judges had ten shots in the match, only three required Spartans netminder Konrad Karasek to make a stop. With the tie, Brandeis is now 6-5-1 on the season (0-1-1 UAA record) but remain searching for firepower, Ben Premo’s ’09 64th minute tally in a losing effort against Bridgewater State back on October 1 being the last time the Judges have tickled twine.
None the less, the tie represents a step in the right direction after dropping their first UAA match of the season 0-3 at Rochester back on October 4 and then followed up on the wrong end of a 0-5 demolition at the hands of MIT. Rochester scored twice in the first five minutes, the second goal being an own goal courtesy of a Judges’ defender. Brandeis could only muster two shots, both coming in the first half. The Judges came out firing against MIT with Premo firing a shot on goal but MIT made their shots count, picking up 3 goals on five shots in the first half. The Judges outshot MIT 15-13 in the game and held a commanding 11-2 edge in corner kicks but could not get the ball past the MIT keepers Tom Caldwell and Dylan Rankin. Sean O’Hare ’12 started the match and finished with 4 saves while Lynch finished off the game with two of his own. Brandeis returns to road action as they take on University of Chicago tonight and then go on to St. Louis on October 19 where they will take on Washington University and then return home to take non-conference foe Springfield College at 7 pm, October 22.
