Volleyball in rough patch

Brandeis volleyball continued their rough patch, splitting the October 11 tri-match, beating Keene State 3-1 before falling to hosts Coast Guard Academy 2-3. Paige Blasco ’11 and Lorraine Wingenbach ’09 led the offense against Keene State with 14 and 12 kills respectively. Wingenbach also led the defense 12 digs while Bridget McAllister ’10 provided 10 of her own.

Taking on Coast Guard, Brandeis jumped out to a 2-1 lead after dominating the third set 25-9 but they were unable to put them away as Coast Guard took the fourth set 25-21 and rallied from 14-13 deficit to clinch the match 17-15. Wingenbach picked up her second double-double of the day with 11 kills and a team leading 14 digs. Violette Ruggiero ’09 had a double-double as well with 12 digs to go along with 22 assists. Piera Carfagno ’10 also had 21 assists in the match.

Paige Blasco led the offense with 16 kills while Nikki Smith ’11 had 13. The Judges will hope to have setter Abby Blasco ’11 back after having been out since September 23 due to an aggravated injury.

Her return will be greatly appreciated as the Judges host the second leg of the UAA Round Robin this weekend at Auerbach Arena, starting with Carnegie-Mellon and Rochester at 10 am on October 18 and then Washington University and Case Western beginning at 9 am, October 19.

The Judges are currently 10-8 for the season and have been 2-7 in their last nine matches.
