It was a rough weekend for the Brandeis men’s tennis team. The duo of Nick White ’11 and Simon Miller ’11 collected the Judges’ only doubles wins at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s northeast regional tournament. Looking to earn a berth in the USTA/ITA National Small College Championships in Mobile, Ala., they advanced to the quarterfinals before losing to the Amherst College pair of Wes Waterman ’12 and Moritz Koenig ’11.White and Miller, the tournament’s top ranked team, had a successful opening two rounds. They first routed Wheaton’s Harry Altman ’11 and Greg Poulin ’11 (8-1) before defeating Will Petrie ’12 and Dylan Page ’13 (8-5), a team from host Williams College.
Their run ended in the quarterfinals. The eighth-seeded pair of Waterman and Koenig bested White and Miller to the tune of an 8-5 final. After beating Brandeis, Waterman and Koenig won their next two matches to take the doubles title.
Number 8 White earned a first round bye in singles play, but his second round draw of Bates College’s Tim Berg ’14 proved too much to handle, as the Brandeis senior fell 6-0, 6-1. White, Steven Milo ’13 and Fred Rozenshteyn ’13 also competed on the singles side.
Rozenshteyn won his opening match, a 7-6(4), 6-4 defeat of Middlebury College junior David Farrah but proved unable to upset sixth-seed Matt Bettles ’13, of Bates. Rozenshteyn was downed in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Bettles advanced to, and lost in, the finals.
Rozenshteyn and partner Ezra Bernstein ’11 as well as Milo and Dave Yovanoff ’13 were Brandeis’ other competitors in doubles play.
The Judges take a break from tournament battle to host the Coast Guard Academy (3-0) this Friday at 3 p.m. It is Brandeis’ first school-on-school match of the season. Last year, the Judges handily defeated Coast Guard 9-0.
