Women’s tennis wins two consolation brackets at NEWITT

Brandeis sent six athletes to this year’s New England Women’s Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament Championships.

Despite none winning outright, four left as champions in the Judges’ final event of the fall season.

In a change from the more typical tennis tournament, each NEWITT match incorporated both singles and doubles competition.

The doubles match was played first, followed by a pair of singles matches. To advance, a team needs to take at least two of the possible three points.

The tournament’s “A” flight played host to Brandeis’ top pair of Rachel Rosman ’11 and Faith Broderick ’13.

Rosman and Broderick were victimized by a tough draw in the round of 32, falling 2-1 to a Tufts tandem ranked second overall. Jumbos senior Julia Browne and rookie Shelci Bowman defeated the Brandeis pair 8-6 in the doubles match. Though Rosman claimed a victory in the singles opener, Bowman felled Broderick, sending the Judges into the tournament’s consolation bracket.

They wouldn’t lose another match. Rosman and Broderick easily defeated Springfield College’s second pair of Sam Carney and Jen Cleary 3-0, before shutting down Babson College by the same score. After bypassing Bowdoin College, the Judges claimed the consolation title when MIT was forced to withdraw from the title draw.

The Judges’ other two duos–Nina Levine ’12 and Mackenzie Gallegos ’11, and Ally Bernstein ’14 and Alexa Katz ’14–competed in the “B” flight.

Levine and Gallegos, ranked third overall in their flight, their opening match against the second team from Smith College.

Despite a singles victory from Gallegos, they dropped the follow-up, 2-1, to the Wheaton College pair of Ellen Van Faasen and Allesandra DiOrio. In their second round consolation bracket, Levine and Gallegos rode a 3-0 victory against Smith’s first pair to the title round.

With Bernstein serving as a substitute for Gallegos in singles play, Brandeis claimed another consolation flight win.

Bernstein and Katz also advanced beyond the round of 32 by way of a 3-0 defeat of a pair from Curry College. After a 3-0 loss to the championship bracket’s ultimate victors-Lauren Hollander and Samantha Gann of Tufts-Bernstein and Katz swept their first consolation match before retiring due to injury.

The Judges bring a 2-0 record in dual match play into the spring semester.
