Soccer teams ranked No. 12 in nation

The Brandeis men’s and women’s soccer teams each have been recently ranked as the No. 12 teams in the nation for Men and Women Division III Soccer for this upcoming season. The placement comes from the National Soccer Coaches Association of American Preseason Top 25 Poll.

The recognition is a continuation of the success last season saw, when the women’s team made it to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III Tournament. The girls finished the 2012 season ranked No. 8, with a record of 16-5-2.

The boys also saw success in 2012, after making it to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Division III Tournament, with a record of 18-3-1.

The women will compete this year with 10 of the 11 starters from last year’s team, while the men will retain eight of last year’s 11, according to BrandeisNOW. This includes stand-out player Dara Spital for the women, who earned the title of third-team All American, and first-team All UAA selection with 33 points in 2012. For the men, Sam Ocel will play another year as a “second senior,” with one more year of NCAA eligibility due to an injury his sophomore year, says BrandeisNOW.

Other UAA teams that made the rankings for women include Emory at No. 2, Washington at No. 4, Carnegie Melon at No. 5 and Chicago at No. 25. The men outscore the division, only joined by Carnegie Melon at No. 18.
