Volleyball rallies to defeat Colby after a narrow loss to Bates

The Brandeis University volleyball team traveled to Maine this past weekend for games against Bates College and Colby. In their first contest, the Judges fell in four sets, dropping a couple of narrow sets. However, the Judges were able to bounce back with a three set win over Colby in their second match of the day in Bates’ Alumni Gymnasium.

The Judges opened the day strong against host Bates, winning the first set 25-13 where they hit .196 to the Bobcats -0.80. However, Bates rallied in the second set with a .333 percentage, taking the set 25-20 to even the match.

Bates did more damage in the next two sets taking both 27-25, edging Brandeis for the narrow win. Emma Bartlett ’20 led the offensive charge once again for the Judges with 14 kills, adding four block assists as well.

Shea Decker-Jacoby ’19, Sports Editor of The Brandeis Hoot, added 12 kills of her own and had 10 digs for her first double double of the season. Marissa Borgert ’21 played an attacking position in this match and contributed 11 kills. Rookie Kaitlyn Oh ’22 led five players in double figures in digs with 19, followed by fellow teammate Yvette Cho ’19 who added 17.

Rookie Stephanie Borr ’22 had 11 digs while seniors Decker-Jacoby and Grace Krumpack ’19 added 10 each. Senior Marlee Nork ’19 set for the opener and finished the match with 33 assists. Rookie Emerson White ’22 finished with seven kills and a career-high five blocks, two solo.

Coming off the narrow loss to Bates, the Judges looked forward to a bounce back win against Colby for their second match of the day. The Judges rolled past the Colby College Mules in three sets. Brandeis outhit the Mules, .209 to .080, including .381 to .030 in the second set.

Bartlett continued her outstanding play with 10 kills and just one error in 21 attempts, giving her a .429 hitting percentage. Kirsten Frauens ’19 and rooke Kaisa Newberg ’22 each hit above .300 as well (6 K-0 E-19 TA, .316 and 4 K-1 E-8 TA, .375, respectively). Borgert was the team’s setter for the match, dishing out 29 assists, her second best total of the season. Oh paced the defensive effort with 18 digs while Yvette Cho had 11.

Brandeis is now 7-5 on the season and looks ahead to its final non-conference match against Roger Williams on Tuesday, Oct. 2. The Judges will open UAA play at noon on Saturday, Sept. 29 against Chicago at home.
