This past weekend, the Judges headed to Worcester to take on a variety of opponents, ending with wins in individual races for the men and the women grasping two team victories. Despite a strong performance from Richard Selznick ’21, the men came up short, ending in losses to the host, Worcester Polytechnic Institute (163 to 116), and Babson (139.5 to 122.5).
On the women’s side, the meet ended in a split, defeating both Babson (201 to 69) and Smith (203.5 to 92.5), while falling to WPI (197 to 96) and Simmons (159.5 to 134.5). These results put the men at a 2-3 record, while the women improve to 2-5.
Selznick was a standout performer, extending his undefeated status in the distance freestyle races after the weekend and also winning the 400 individual medley (I.M.). Claiming the first place title in all three of his individual events, Selznick managed to finish seven seconds before his next competitor in the 1000 yard freestyle, by five-hundredths of a second in the 500 freestyle, and by half of a second in the 400 I.M.
In addition to the longer distances, the 200 freestyle was also well swum by the Judges, with sophomores Daniel Wohl, Marcelo Ohno-Machado and Chase Chen coming in second, third, and fourth places respectively. In the butterfly contests, Tamir Zitelny ’20 found himself in second place in the 100, while classmate Matthew Arcemont ’20 pulled off a fourth place finish in the 200.
The first-year class was also impressive, as Brendon Lu ’22 settled runner-up outcomes in both the 100 breaststroke and the 400 I.M. while Alex Wang ’22 fell into third place in the 200 breaststroke and finished fourth in the 400 I.M.
On the women’s side, there were two first place finishes from a pair of rookies, as Gazelle Umbay ’22 won the 200 butterfly by about half a second, while Claire Xu ’22 championed in the 400 I.M. by four-hundredths of a second.
In the freestyle category, it was captain Kylie Herman ’19 that took second and fifth places in the 200 and 500 respectively, and rookie Lauren Howard ’22 fell in fourth and fifth in the 100 and 50 yard events. The breaststroke races were dominated by Natalya Wozab ’20, who received third in the 200 and tied an opponent for sixth in the 100, as well as rookie Olivia Stebbins ’22, who topped sixth and fourth position finishes in the same races.
To seal their wins, the women performed well in the relays too, with a runner-up placement in the 200 medley that included Xu, Stebbins, Umbay, and Annie Huang ’21. Lastly, in the 200 freestyle relay, the Judges took both the second and third place spots, with Howard, Uajda Musaka ’21, Adriene Aponte ’20 and Herman finishing just two seconds before Audrey Kim ’21, Wozab, Sofia Chevez ’21, and Umbay.
The Judges look to extend their winning streak against their Waltham rivals from Bentley University next Friday, Nov. 16 at 6 p.m.
