Morris-Evans and Valdez triumph at Tufts

Both the men’s and women’s track teams competed at Tufts University this past weekend, battling it out in the non-scoring Cupid Invitational. The Brandeis University Judges had top performers on both sides, with the men being led by Dion Morris-Evans ’22 and the women by Lisbeth Valdez ’21.

Morris-Evans ran his way to third place in the 60-meter hurdles, recording a time of 8.75 seconds. He then competed in the high jump where he also received third place with a distance of 1.80 meters (5-10.75). This performance was his best in his early career. Also in the 60-meter hurdle event, Jack Allan ’20 ran quite well, recording a time of 8.85 seconds to put him comfortably in fifth place. In addition to running, Allan jumped too, landing at 6.13 meters (20-1.5), prompting him with a sixth-place finish. In the pole vault, Breylen Ammen ’21 competed well, receiving third place with a height of 4.40 meters (14-5.25). Classmate Kevin Truong ’21 finished best for the Judges in the triple jump, achieving ninth place with a stretch of 11.40 meters. Running his personal record, Aaron Portman ’22 placed in the top 10 of the 600-meter event, finishing with a time of 1:26.46. Lastly, Scott Grote ’19 also reached the top 10 of his respective event, throwing the shot put at a distance of 12.82 meters (42-0.75).

On the women’s side, Valdez ran to second place in the 600-meter event, only beating teammate Maya Bliss ’19 by four tenths of a second. The two finished with times of 1:41.19 and 1:41.59, respectively. Leinni Valdez ’21, Lisbeth’s twin sister, also performed well in this event, coming in fourth place with a time of 1:42.00. Kanya Brown ’19 ran her season bests through three rounds of the 60-meter dash, seeing times of 8.29, 8.21 and 8.26 seconds. These performances landed her in sixth place. Meaghan Barry ’19 competed in the mile, placing in the top ten amongst her competitors with a time of 5:29.36. Lastly, rookies Devin Hiltunen ’22 and Sonali Anderson ’22 both received third place in their respective events. Hiltunen ran the 200-meter dash in a time of 27.04 seconds, while Anderson ran the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 9.32 seconds, tying her own school record.

This upcoming weekend, the Judges have another full schedule, heading to the Valentines Invitational at Boston University as well as the Gordon Kelly Invitational at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
