Spring 2024 Marathon begins

In emails sent to Brandeis students on Sept. 19 and Sept. 25, the Brandeis Student Union Allocations Board (A-Board) announced to students that Marathon would be starting soon and gave students information about a new policy that is being implemented for this round of Marathon.

Marathon began on Sept. 20 and will close on Oct. 20. The A-Board approval process begins after that, stretching from Oct. 21 to Nov. 6. Allocations decisions will be released on the following day, Nov. 7, with the appeal period running from Nov. 8 to Nov. 18. Finally, decisions on those appeals will be released on Nov. 21.

Additionally, A-Board told students that they would be “implementing a new policy: Previously, clubs were asked to budget for custodians, public safety officers, MTS and BEMCo. This year, clubs will not budget for custodians, public safety officers, MTS, BEMCo, the Copy Center and Chums as these are costs within the university. These services will be paid for separately from your club’s budget. However, please continue to include rental costs such as stage equipment, tables and chairs not found on campus, as these are paid out to external providers.”

A-Board added that “Inter-departmental costs and their budgeting has been one of the most challenging aspects for Club Finances in the past due to the complexity of this process. From the objective standpoint of making club processes more efficient, the Allocations Board has decided to implement a new change in policy for all Interdepartmental charges. This Marathon will be the starting point of implementing this policy and there may be some bumps in the road, so please bear with us as we navigate all aspects of implementing this new policy.”

They also noted that “For any additional equipment that a club might need for their event which is not available on campus and needs to be rented via University Events, the club will continue to budget for this cost as this cost is an external cost charged by an outside rental organization and is not an inter-departmental cost,” also saying that “[they] expect the budgets for all the club events to go down significantly for the upcoming Marathon, as you do not have to account for these inter-departmental charges anymore.”

Office hour sessions for students who are performing Marathon for their clubs will be held on Sept. 29 from 2 to 3 p.m. at The Gender and Sexuality Center and on Oct. 10 from 7 to 8 p.m. on Zoom.
