Men’s soccer captures win against Rochester

Since our last publication, the men’s soccer team has played three games. As they share the same travel schedule with the women’s soccer team this year, they also traveled to Chicago to face the University of Chicago (UChicago) Maroons for one of these games. A week after they returned home, they hosted the Emory University Eagles and then the University of Rochester Yellowjackets on the same weekend.

The Judges started off with a fairly evenly matched game against the UChicago Maroons on Oct. 19. Within the first six minutes of the game, the Judges found themselves on the board. This was the result of a goal shot by Maddox Yu ’27 who received a well-placed cross from Dylan Marzouca ’28. The Maroons did not allow the Judges to get away with this, though. After UChicago scored two goals to counter the Judges’ early goal, the first half ended with a score of the Judges trailing 2-1 to the Maroons. In the second half, the Judges worked to find ways to capitalize and at least tie the game. They did so when Eli Mones ’25 had a look from the 40-yard line. Despite their tying of the score, the Maroons still found a way to counteract this and ultimately scored their winning goal in the 77th minute. As the Judges were not able to find an answer to that goal, they fell 3-2 to the home team.

Once they were back in Massachusetts, the Judges hosted the Emory Eagles in another UAA-conference game. This game was far less eventful than the Judges’ previous as the Eagles scored in the 37th minute to both start off and close out scoring for the entire game. As the Judges fought to find an answer to this goal, their best opportunity came in the 71st minute when Rainer Osselmann-Chai ’26 took a shot on net, though the Eagles’ keeper stepped up accordingly to make the stop. Without any answer to Emory’s early goal, the Judges fell to them with a score of 0-1.

In the Judges’ most recent game, they hosted the Rochester Yellowjackets in one of their more exciting games of the season. The Judges set the tone of the game early on with three goals in the first half. They held the Yellowjackets to a goal in each half, and earned a 3-2 win. The first Brandeis goal came in the 24th minute when Yu ’27 lofted a shot over the Rochester keeper’s head from 50-yards out. Just a few minutes later, the Judges scored again off of a similar shot. This time it was scored by Elan Romo ’27 who received a ball from Nico Beninda ’26. The Judges scored their winning goal in the 38th minute of the game when Kenshin Murakawa ’27 sent a corner kick into the box that was placed well-enough to allow Andres Gonzalez ’25 to bury the goal inside the near goalpost. For the rest of the game the Judges were fighting to hold off the Yellowjackets. Though Rochester did score a goal in the 63rd minute off of a penalty kick, the Judges came away with a 2-3 win.

Looking ahead, the Judges will cap off their 2024 season in the coming two weeks with a game against Case Western Reserve University this weekend and then they will face the New York University Violets to close it out.
