Over the February break, the Judges’ baseball team traveled south to play a few games in the warmer weather.
The Judges’ first games were against Oglethorpe University (OU) in Brookhaven, GA. This was the first time in history that our baseball team faced Oglethorpe University Stormy Petrels.
In their first game of two against OU, the Judges came out victorious with a final score of 3-2. The Judges started the game off strong with a run in the top of the first to get the ball rolling. This run was the result of a double by Henry Aronwald ’27 which sent Connor Crowley ’27 home, earning the Judges’ first run of the 2025 season. The Judges’ next run came in the top of the fourth inning when Dylan Walsh ’27 brought Jake Freed (GRAD) home with an unearned run. The final run the Judges got was in the seventh when Ben Kuja ’28 drove a single up the middle to earn the Judges the win. OU’s only two runs came in the bottom of the fifth.
The second game against OU was more exciting than the first, but the Judges were not able to keep up with their opponents during this game. They ended up losing 11-6 against OU. Once again, the Judges scored a run in the top of the first, but they could not respond to the 11 runs that OU went on to score.
The next day, the Judges traveled to Tennessee to play at Sewanee: The University Of The South. This game was close, but Brandeis’ primary momentum came in the ninth inning, when it was too late to make up for their lost ground. They fell to Sewanee 6-4 despite getting the tying run to bat in the tail end of the ninth. With more training and acclimation to being in season, wins like these will be achievable for the Judges in no time.
In their most recent game, the Judges faced the Berry College Vikings in Mount Berry, GA. Brandeis started off as they had usually done by scoring the first two runs of the game in the top of the first. They had three scoreless innings, then a five-run inning in the fifth, and a three-run inning in the seventh. Despite having their highest-scoring performance yet this season, they could not come up with a tying or winning run during the final three innings of the game. Due to this, the Judges lost 11-10 against Berry. Looking at the stats, Aronwald ’27 led the Judges with going 2-4 in the batter’s box with four RBIs while Eddie Zanor (GRAD) earned three RBIs off of four at-bats. On the mound, this was Jack Sweeney’s first collegiate outing. Despite this loss, this young pitcher shows great potential for his years to come as a Judge.
Looking ahead, the Judges are headed to Trinity College in Connecticut for a game on Tuesday, March 4. Weather provided, this will be the first game close to home for the Judges. The first home game is scheduled for March 15; however, this is weather-dependent. Looking at the upcoming forecast, the warmer weather should have the field in playable condition come mid-March.
