2024 baseball season commences with a win

This past week, the Brandeis baseball team opened up their season. Including their first game, they have played four away games so far this season, one of which was a win.

Their first game on March 1 was against the Springfield College Pride. The game started slowly for the Judges as they had four scoreless innings. However, once the Pride had a three-run fourth inning, the Judges started to crawl their way back into the game. Having tied the game 4-4 by the top of the seventh, the Judges thought they had a chance. However, the Pride answered by scoring three more runs to establish a lead of 7-4. This was the final score of the game. Notable plays by the Judges during this outing include Dylan Walsh ’27 earning multiple hits, and six of the Judges’ hits came from players who are new to the team this year. Despite the losing score, these stats show that the newcomers have lots in store for the team.

In their following game, the Judges faced the Mitchell College Mariners for the first time ever. The Judges had a stronger start than their previous game, as they scored a run in the top of the first inning. This run was a result of a double by Brian King (GRAD), which drove Walsh ’27. Though the Mariners’ bats were quiet for the first three innings, they gained momentum in the fourth inning with two runs, and ultimately did not look back. The Judges were only able to score one more run, while the Mariners went on to score five more. The final score of the game was 7-2. On a positive note, King went 2-4 on the day hitting a double and two RBIs.

Next, the Judges went on to face the Trinity College Bantams in a quite successful showing. The Judges started off strong with three runs in the first inning and then went on to score in every other inning up to the fifth. While scoring 13 runs in those five innings, the Judges held the opposing Bantams to only four runs. However, the Judges lost some of their defensive momentum in the sixth when the Bantams scored four more runs to conclude the scoring. The final score was 13-8, Judges, in their first win of the 2024 season. Notable statistics from this game include seven of the nine Brandeis starters hits and all of them reached base at least once. Additionally, Eddie Zanor (GRAD) had a team high of four RBI’s.

For the final game of this recap, the Judges did not have a very successful game against the Tufts University Jumbos in Medford. Though the Judges had a five-run inning in the fifth, this was not enough to overcome the dominance of the Jumbos. The final score of the game was a tough 26-5 loss for the Judges.

Looking ahead, the Judges will be traveling down to Buzzards Bay this weekend to play a doubleheader against Massachusetts Maritime Academy.
