Women’s tennis drops first two of the season with limited roster

The No. 10 ranked Judges fell in their season openers to Bryant University and MIT 1-8 and 0-9, respectively. The Bryant Bulldogs improve to 4-3 on the season and the MIT Engineers are now 1-0. 

Against Bryant University, Diana Dehterevich ’20 gave the Judges their sole win of the season so far at No. 1 singles, defeating Sarah Hickey from Bryant 7-6(8), 6-0. Rachel Zubrinsky ’21 had the next closest match, forcing Aleksi Gottleib from Bryant into a third set tiebreaker at No. 4 singles. Gottleib was victorious with a score of 2-6, 7-6(7), 10-6. Lauren Bertsch ’21 lost at No. 2 singles, 1-6, 4-6; Ana Hatfield ’22 fell at No. 3 singles 5-7, 3-6; Isabel Cepeda ’21 lost at No. 5 singles 3-6, 1-6 and Grace Wang ’23 fell 1-6, 1-6 at No. 6 singles. All the Judges’ doubles teams lost 2-6 with Bertsch and Dehterevich at No. 1 doubles, Cepeda and Hatfield at No. 2 and Wang and Zubrinsky at No. 3. 

At MIT the following weekend, with Dehterevich no longer on the roster, the Judges now only have five eligible players on their roster, forcing them to forfeit matches at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles. 

The Engineers did not drop a single set in singles or doubles during the match. Bertsch and Zubrinksy at No. 1 doubles had a close match against Sarah Pertsemlidis and Libby Rickeman from MIT, losing 7-8. Hatfield and Cepeda lost to Megan Guenther and Pamela Duke of MIT 2-8. 

The closest match in singles was at No. 2 singles where Hatfield fell to Seraphin Castelino 4-6, 4-6. Pertsemlidis and Yuka Perera from MIT both double bageled Bertsch and Wang at No. 1 singles and No. 5 singles, respectively. Zubrinsky fell to Ashley Tenges 4-6, 1-6 and Cepeda lost to Lara Rakocevic 2-6, 4-6. 

The Judges fall to 0-2 on the season and will face No. 1 ranked and University Athletic Association (UAA) rival Emory University in the first round of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III Team Indoor Championships at Centre College in Nicholasville, KY on Friday Feb. 28.
