The Brandeis Mens and Womens Track and Field teams traveled to Bowdoin University on Jan 14 for a mid-winter meet, and when all was settled both groups of Judges were on the short end of the scoring.
The men tallied 51 points, which placed them last out of the four participating teams, a distant seventy points behind meet champion Bowdoin. The other teams involved were Southern Maine, which scored 87 points, and Colby, which recorded 55.
The womens meet was a dual meet between only Brandeis and the Bowdoin Polar Bears, who were able to run up a 115-36 score against the Judges. The lopsided losses can be attributed to Brandeis depleted line-up, which was an unfortunate side-effect of the universitys winter break.
The Lady Judges did have a bright spot in freshman Kate Henry 09, who won two events in her collegiate dual meet debut. She captured the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.80 seconds and followed that with a 28.69 in the 200 meters. Megan Bisceglia 07 fell just short of winning the 800-meter run, losing to Bowdoins Amy Ahearn by four hundredths of a second. The low point on the track came when Bowdoin swept the top four places in the 3000 meters, taking all eleven points in the event.
The mens team fared slightly better, producing four individual winners over the course of the meet. Ryan Parker 06 coasted to victory in the 800 meters in 2:01, five seconds faster than his nearest competitor. David Weinstein 08 and Geoff Fauchet 08 won the 200 meters and 600 meters respectively, with Fauchets 1:28.63 besting Southern Maines Chris Yankopoulos time by five hundredths of a second.
Weinstein also placed second in the 55 meter dash after finishing first in the preliminary round with a time of 6.70 seconds. Southern Maines Derek Murchie won the final with a time of 6.69, two hundredths better than Weinsteins 6.71.
The other Brandeis victory came courtesy of Jordan Rothman 09, who cleared 5 6 in the high jump. The Judges were hurt by an unspectacular effort in the throwing events, in which they scored no points.
The Judges' lone home meet of the season will take place on Saturday, Jan 21. The meet begins at noon in Gosman. After that, the team will head to Boston University to participate in the Terrier Classic on Jan 27 and 28.
