The Hoot takes a look at fencing

With the fencing team taking up its arms on Saturday, The Hoot was able to catch up with men's fencing captain Brenden Doris-Pierce '07 (sabre). Doris-Pierce was gracious enough to provide The Hoot, with insights on the men's side via e-mail.

Condon, Steven-Rumann take honors in cross-country

The Judges had two competitors this weekend who earned all-association honors at the mens and womens UAA cross country championships this past weekend at Washington University in St. Louis. Tim Condon 08 received second-team all-association honors while Camille Stevens-Rumann 07, took all-association citations. Both these runners led their respective teams and posted remarkable results on their 6k and 8k courses.

Remembering Red Auerbach

Red Auerbachs dead. Even though he was 89 and had health problems for years, it was still a bit of a surprise to go on to washingtonpost.com Saturday night to find the words Red Auerbach Dies. Just like that, a heart attack took away a man who had become an institution, not only in Boston but in the realm of sports in general.

Men’s X-country shares 2nd, women take 5th at UAAs

After a long season of wins and personal records, the mens and womens cross country teams finished out their regular seasons last weekend with the UAA Championships at Washington University. The women were able to place fifth of the eight teams present at the competition while the men took second place, tied with host Washington University with 86 points. Tim Condon 08 earned second-team all-association honors and just missed first team by one spot. Co-captain of the womens team Camille Stevens-Rumann 07 placed 12th in her six kilometer race, earning her all-association citations.

Carfagno tournament MVP, McAllister Athlete of the Week

After a 5-0 week, sweeping every match, the Judges are currently 17-14 with only the UAA Championships left on their schedule. Two reasons why they are coming in with a winning record have been due to the play of their rookie middle blockersPiera Carfagno 10 and Bridget McAllister 10. Both players had strong performances during an exceptionally strong week, helping Brandeis sweep the 2006 Judges Classic, never once losing a game to the four opponents faced. As a result, both were rewarded: They were named to the All-Tournament with Carfagno getting MVP honors and McAllister receiving UAA Athlete of the Week honors.

Red Hot Chili Peppers in, The Mars Volta out

Last weekends Red Hot Chili Peppers/Mars Volta concert at the TD Banknorth Garden gave attendees a stark dichotomy of live concert approaches. On the one hand, the Chili Peppers slammed through almost two hours of hits, solos, and antics;

the band was clearly onstage with the prominent goal of putting on an entertaining performance, and it had the audience fully engaged and cheering its every move. At the other end of the spectrum, the Mars Volta spent the majority of its time meandering through new material, either unconcerned or oblivious to the complete and utter lack of positive response it was receiving.

The right time for An Inconvenient Truth

Students for Environmental Action and their subsidiary organization the Campus Climate Challenge hosted a screening of An Inconvenient Truth this week from Monday to Thursday in the Golding auditorium. The purpose of the event was to not only display the harmful effects of global warming through the documentary by Al Gore, but also to encourage people to take part in the activities of the club. Over one hundred people attended the first showing of the movie on Monday night and watched the hour and a half long documentary. Afterwards, students stayed around as members of the organization sat behind tables and provided more information about the topic and ways students can get involved in solving the various problems.

Continuing the series of Hoot interviews with student directors, I recently had a chance to sit down with the enormously busy David Klasko 07 and have a chat about the play he has been directing, which is running this weekend in the Shapiro Theater.

Union designing new policy to track club events and leadership

The Student Union has started to draft a policy wherein the Union Treasurer would compile reports on the success of chartered club events and club leadership that would be used to determine future funding, according to Treasurer Choon Woo Ha 08 and a Union memo obtained by The Hoot. Financial board (F-board) members who attend events would be encouraged to submit these reports.

German-Jewish Dialogue event examines role of WWII marketing

On Monday, Oct. 23, the German-Jewish Dialogue at Brandeis hosted visiting speaker Ulrike Dittrich. The event, entitled “Concentration Camp Souvenirs: Pieces of Memory or Objects of Commercial Mass Production?,” was based upon Dittrichs Ph.D. thesis project “Concentration Camp and Holocaust Keepsakes objects of memory in everyday life: semiotic narratives in the scope of holocaust site tourism and event culture.”

Pachanga crowd requires Public Safety intervention

Public Safety Officers intervened to control a crowd of students attempting to enter Pachanga, the International Club-sponsored dance that occurred Saturday night after the crowd began pushing towards the entrance, injuring one student. The officers shut the doors to the event for approximately fifteen minutes and reopened them once order was restored in the crowd.

MSoccer steamrolls Lasell

The Brandeis mens soccer team went 2-0 this week, recording two big shutouts against Lasell College and Colby-Sawyer College. These two wins are part of a four game shutout streak that the Judges are currently riding. In the last four games the Judges have outscored their opponents 21-0.

Golf finishes 32 out of 43 at NEIGA

The varsity golf team finished off the season with its final tournament from Oct. 22 to Oct. 24 in Brewster, Mass. After a season of ups and downs, the team was able to make a second day comeback in order to place 32nd overall out of over 40 teams. The Judges played well and many of the team members scored their personal bests for the season.

Volleyball spikes Lasell

At home and slightly hobbling with one starter injured, captain Shannon Trees 08, the Judges were more than a match for the Lasell Lasers, who really had no answer to the Judges onslaught. Missing three starters of their own, the Lasers fell 3-0, never once coming close in lopsided affairs of 30-13, 30-8, 30-15.

Mike Snyder and the entire Brandeis womens backfield starters were honored with the UAA Athlete of the Week Awards.

What beams with the pride of flags waving, educates us in rhyme and verse, and pulses with tangos yearning? What commands with flamencos exquisite urgency;

rivals salsas exuberant joy;

and curses loudly with the desperation of the street? It is the struggle to break down the barriers that confine us, and it was the theme of this years Main Event show.
