This week, three Brandeis players have been honored as the University Athletic Association Athletes of the Week. The award goes to Joe Coppens '08 from the men's basketball team, Will Friedman '09 of the men's fencing team, and Kirsten Heinz '08 of the women's fencing team.
Partially because of the great play of Coppens, the men's basketball team was able to split a pair of games against its nationally-ranked UAA opponents and snap a 29-game losing streak against rival Washington University. Coppens put up 19.5 points per game while averaging 3 rebounds and 1.5 assists. He made good on all ten of his free throws, shot an impressive 50% from the floor (12-24) and went 5 of 13 from beyond the arc. In the triple-overtime thriller over Washington University, Coppens played 50 minutes and hit the game-winning trey with just over a minute left in the third OT.
With the help of Friedman, a foilist, and Heinz, who fences saber, the men's and women's teams both earned the unofficial UAA title. The men were able to put it together and defeat New York University with an 18-9 victory, while the women were nearly as successful, winning 17-10. The two fencers were both able to post perfect 3-0 records.
