Women’s volleyball falls short in game against Wellesley

The women’s volleyball team suffered a three-set sweep in their second game of the day on Sunday, Sept. 7 against Wellesley College.

After a game delay of over an hour, the Judges started off strong in the first set, driven by first-year setter, Julie Kim ’18. Kim seemed to be everywhere and drove the positive energy on the court with 25 assists, four digs and one kill for the game. The team pulled out all the stops, keeping Wellesley players on their toes. However, it wasn’t enough to pull out the win.

Keeping with a common theme for the Judges, the second set started off strong with great serves by Elsie Bernaiche ’15 and Jessie Moore ’18. Bernaiche also helped keep the Judges in the game with exceptional defense and 12 digs on the game. However, bad luck left the Judges falling short of the win after a questionable four touch call, halfway through the second set. The Judges suffered another unfortunate net violation that seemed to seal the deal for Wellesley, hyping them up for the win.

Jessica Kaufman ’18 started Brandeis on the right note, with a big block for the Judges in the start of the third set. The Judges had to win this set to come back, and it was evident the players wanted it. Wellesley and Brandeis went point-for-point until Wellesley started to pull away, with some killer serves the Judges couldn’t return. With a deficit of 12-21, Brandeis’ luck was not looking up, that is until Brandeis rode a little serving streak, racking up six more points before losing the third set 18 to 25.

Brandeis was led offensively by Liz Hood ’16 with seven kills, Moore with six kills and Carly Gutner-Davis ’16 and Maddie Engeler ’18, each with five kills for the game. Brandeis fought a tough game, pulling out all the stops both offensively and defensively, but it just wouldn’t come together for the Judges. Small series of miscues seemed to seal the fate of the Judges loss, coming at the end of each set, allowing Wellesley a gap they took advantage of.

The Judges, now 1-5 on the season, are away this weekend at the Trinity Invitational, with their first game kicking off Friday Sept. 12 against the Trinity Bantams.
