Men’s basketball suffers two losses

Men’s basketball suffered losses this past weekend in University Athletic Association (UAA) play. The Judges faced the University of Rochester, ranked 25, on Friday night, losing 75-66. The Judges’ schedule didn’t get any easier, facing 17th ranked Emory on Sunday. The men’s basketball team fell 90-57, dropping to 4-12 this season, and 0-5 in the University Athletic Association

In Friday’s game against the University of Rochester, the Judges struggled against the nationally ranked team, never gaining the advantage on their opponents. The Judges did manage to keep the score close in the first half, heading into halftime with only a nine point deficit, but the Rochester Yellowjackets broke away in the second half. At the 5:40 mark the Judges made one last attempt at a comeback with an 8-0 run, but it wasn’t enough, finishing the game 75-66.
Brandeis shot 10-20 from behind the three point line. Collin Sawyer ’20 was the lead scorer for the Judges with 14 points, Lawrence Sabir ’21 followed close behind with 12 points, seven assists and four rebounds. Chandler Jones ’21 also contributed double digits with 10 points. On the defensive end, Latye Workman ’18 snatched six rebounds for the Judges.
The Judges faced an even tougher opponent Sunday, playing Emory, which is ranked 17th nationally. Yet again, the Judges kept the game close in the first few minutes of the game, when Eric D’Aguanno’s ’20 three pointer with 12:26 left in the first half closed the gap from 11 to 8. Emory immediately answered, leaving the Judges behind, extending their lead to 22-8 with nine minutes left in the first half. The Judges came within 10 points, but didn’t manage to gain the lead. The Judges were behind 49-31 at the half.

In the second half of the game, the Emory Eagles just extended their lead over the Judges. The Eagles finished with a 90-57 victory over Brandeis.

D’Aguanno led Brandeis with 13 points off the bench, including three from behind the arc. Jones and Workman both earned 12 points in the game against Emory. Workman also led the team in rebounds with six boards, and contributed three assists. Jones and Corey Sherman ’19 followed close behind Workman in boards, with five rebounds apiece.

The men’s basketball team is back in action this Friday against UAA conference opponent Case Western Reserve University at 8 p.m. in Auerbach Arena.
