Swimming and diving teams split in home opener

Brandeis swimming and diving team (BUSDT) competed in their first home meet against Wheaton College on Oct. 27. The men’s team beat the Wheaton College Lyons 122-66, whereas the women’s team fell Wheaton 134-69.

The men’s team won nine of 11 events to secure their 51-point victory. The men started the first event with a win—the relay team made up of Benton Ferebee ’22, Brendon Lu ’22, Matthew Arcemont ’20 and Daniel Wohl ’21 won the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:38.84, a narrow hundredth second lead before Wheaton’s “A” team.

Of the five individual winners, the sophomore trio of Wohl, Chase Chen ’21 and Richard Selznick ’21 won two races each. Wohl swept both the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard breaststroke events. He finished with a time of 22.67 seconds and a time of 1:01.97 respectively.

Chen won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 49.75 seconds and the 200-yard freestyle even with a time of 1:50.09. Chen out-touched classmate Marcelo Ohno-Machado ’21 in the 200 by 0.05 seconds.

The top performer of the day was Richard Selznick ’21, who remains undefeated in both distance freestyle events. He won the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:10.28 and the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:55.72. Selznick won by 29 seconds and 13 seconds respectively.

Other top performers include single-winners Lu and Arcemont. Lu swam the 200 IM with a time of 2:03.37, a slim 17 seconds faster than teammate Tamir Zitelny ’20. Arcemont finished the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 55.14 seconds, 0.15 seconds before a Wheaton competitor.

On the women’s side, Kylie Herman ’19 was the sole winner, finishing the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:30.98. Herman also earned second place in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:03.80.

The Judges took home second place finishes in the 50-yard freestyle, the 200-yard individual medley (IM) and the 100-yard freestyle races. Uajda Musaku ’21 was runner-up in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 26.45 seconds and the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 57.29 seconds. Rookie Claire Xu ’22 placed second in the 200 IM with a time of 2:20.24. The relay team of Lauren Howard ’22, Natalya Wozab ’20, Annie Huang ’21 and Herman finished the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:58.27.

Currently, the men’s team has a season record of 2-1, whereas the women’s team has lost all three dual-meets. Both the men and women’s swimming and diving teams are back in action this Friday, Nov. 2 at Worcester, M.A. The teams will be competing against Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), Babson College, Smith College and Simmons College.
