I have wanted to try Nothing Bundt Cakes for months and finally had the perfect opportunity when my birthday came around in October. Nothing Bundt Cakes is a chain of bakeries that sell bundt cakes (which are delicious). They have four different types of cakes: Bundtinis (small, bite-sized cakes), Bundtlets (cakes that are about the size of jumbo cupcakes), and eight- and 10-inch bundt cakes. They come in the following flavors: carrot, chocolate chocolate chip, classic vanilla, confetti, gluten-free chocolate chip, lemon, marble, pecan praline, red velvet and white chocolate raspberry. They also have seasonal flavors. Being the cake lover I am, I decided to try all the flavors they have. Please note that we are rating the cakes against one another, as opposed to other desserts.
Carrot
I think the carrot cake had similar issues as the red velvet did: It is a classic, which is a difficult standard to keep. Though unlike the red velvet the carrot cake was actually kind of disappointing. I really did not appreciate the pineapple bits in the cake; that was just weird and does not belong in a carrot cake. It just was not that good, especially compared to other carrot cakes I have had in the past. Overall, I would rate it a 7.5 out of 10 and will not be buying it again.
Classic Vanilla
This is a classic, and it is difficult to be a good classic. But Nothing Bundt Cakes did fairly well: The cake had a very nice flavor; it was sweet, but not too sweet, and it went very nicely with the cream cheese frosting. Overall I would rate it a nine out of 10, and would buy it again, but only if the confetti one was not available.
Chocolate Chocolate Chip
I am a chocolate lover. I will take chocolate over vanilla any day. This makes saying what I am about to say even more difficult to say: This cake was a disappointment. It was still moist, but the flavor of the chocolate cake was just not there, and it did not go well with the cream cheese frosting. Honestly, I ate the frosting separately from the cake since it really ruined the experience. Overall, I would rate it a six out of 10 and would never buy again.
Confetti
This was my favorite cake. I know it is weird that I much prefer the confetti to the regular vanilla, but there is something about the sprinkles that makes it taste that much better. This cake was perfect: delicious vanilla cake and incredible cream cheese frosting. Overall, I would rate it a 9.5 out of 10, and I will definitely be buying it again the next time I go.
Gluten Free Chocolate Chip
This cake was not as moist and fluffy as the rest of the bundt cakes. I have never had one of their bundt cakes taste like this, and I have had four day old cakes, and they are still moist. I have already mentioned that I don’t really like their chocolate chips, so as you can imagine I did not like them in this cake either, though I have to say that they are pretty generous with the amount of chocolate chips. In terms of texture it was definitely the worst bundt cake I tried. In terms of flavor, it was not bad, but there was nothing too special about it either. Overall I would rate it a six out of 10, but if I had to give a texture rating, it would get a three, and I will never get this flavor again.
Lemon
My parents decided that they wanted to try the lemon, so of course, I took the opportunity to try it. What can I say: It’s lemon. I don’t know if it’s a good lemon or a bad lemon, but it’s lemon. It’s as moist and soft as the other cakes, and the frosting is still good. I don’t like lemon-flavored things, but my parents liked it. The problem wasn’t the cake, though, it was the lemon. I do have to say that the lemon flavor was very strong in the cake. Overall I would rate it a five and will definitely not buy it again.
Marble
I never understood marble cake (or marble anything really). Chocolate is amazing, and vanilla is pretty good, but whose bright idea was it to mix them? Though I have to give this cake credit; it was pretty good, regardless of how weird the concept itself is. But the cake would be better off without the chocolate batter added. Overall I would rate it an eight out of 10, but I would probably not buy it again, just because there are better flavors.
Pecan Praline
This cake was definitely the wild card of the bunch: We only ordered it because we were trying everything, and it did not sound bad. But, oh my god, was this an amazing bundt cake. I love pecans, and this was just the perfect combination of vanilla cake, frosting and pecans. Overall, I would rate it a nine out of 10 and am definitely buying it again soon.
Red Velvet
I have to say I was a little disappointed by the red velvet bundt cake, though I do have to say that I had high expectations for it. It was just not as good as other red velvet cakes I had, and after all the good things I read about it in particular, I expected a lot from it. It also has chocolate chips in it, which was straight up weird: Chocolate chips do not belong in red velvet cake. Overall, I would rate it an eight out of 10; if they removed the chocolate chips I would probably give it an 8.5, but I would not buy it again.
White Chocolate Raspberry
I thought this was an interesting cake: The combination of the vanilla cake and raspberry jam worked well together. However, I thought that the raspberry jam did the cake as a whole a disservice: it would be better off without it. Overall, I would rate it a seven out of 10 and would not buy it again.
Seasonal Flavors:
Blueberry
Blueberry is one of their seasonal flavors, and I have to say, that’s unfortunate because this was a very good cake. The flavor was very unique; it doesn’t taste like anything I’ve had before. I am not sure if it actually tasted like blueberry or blueberry-flavored things, but it was still very good. Overall I would rate it a seven and will definitely buy it again before the flavor changes.
Lemon Raspberry
Since I am not big on lemon cake, I was really hoping that the raspberry would allow me to actually like it. However, this cake has a very strong lemon flavor and I couldn’t really taste the raspberry. Even though I clearly saw the raspberry bits in the bundtlet, this cake didn’t taste any different than the regular lemon bundtlet. Overall, this was a fairly disappointing seasonal flavor; I would rate it a six.
Peppermint Chocolate Chip
I love mint. Mint ice cream, mint body butters, mint anything really. However, usually peppermint and chocolate desserts are not my favorite: Usually the peppermint is way too strong and the two flavors clash. But I was pleasantly surprised by the actual bundt cake; the peppermint flavor was quite subtle, but it was strong enough for you to be able to actually taste it. I also realized that I really do not like the chocolate chips they use: they ruined the red velvet cake and honestly, this one too. If it did not have chocolate chips, it would be significantly better: They just make the cake way too sweet. Overall, I would rate the peppermint bundt cake an eight out of 10.
Pumpkin Spice
I am not the biggest fan of pumpkin spice; I think it gets put onto too many things. But I was so pleasantly surprised when I tried this cake. The pumpkin spice was not too overpowering, and the way it paired with the cream cheese frosting was just a match made in heaven. Overall, I would rate it a nine out of 10 and will definitely buy it again.
Snickerdoodle
I really enjoy snickerdoodles, so I was hoping that this bundt cake would be as good as the dessert that inspired it. I was not disappointed: It had the perfect balance of the sweet dough and the frosting that adds a tang to it. It couldn’t compare with the confetti bundt cake, but it was still good overall. I would rate it an eight out of 10.
Strawberries and Cream
After yet another trip to Nothing Bundt cakes, I got my favorite confetti bundt cake and their new seasonal flavor: Strawberries and Cream. It was a surprisingly good bundt cake, I wasn’t expecting to like it as much as I did. Usually when it comes to strawberry cakes, the strawberry flavor is either overpowering or not present at all. In this cake, the strawberry flavor was obviously present, but it wasn’t overpowering. The amazing cream cheese frosting and the cake were a nice combination, since the cake was quite sweet while the frosting has a pleasant tang to it; it made the whole cake not too sweet. Overall, I would rate this cake a 8.5 out of 10, and am actually quite upset that this is a seasonal flavor.
Overall, all the cakes were very moist and soft and just the perfect cake texture. The cream cheese frosting was amazing (honestly, if we could just buy the frosting, we would).
