Judges’ last chance in 2023

In the final indoor meet of the 2022-2023 season, the Brandeis track and field teams competed in the Tufts Last Chance Invitational at Tufts University.  While the event was non-scoring, both the men’s and women’s squads had top performers, including several Judges who set new personal records.  Senior sprinter Dion Morris-Evans ’23 set a new personal record, not once but twice, in the 60 meter hurdles, while sophomore Alya Campell ’25 placed in the top 10 in the 60 meter hurdles advancing to the finals for the Brandeis women’s squad.

In the 60 meter hurdles, Morris-Evans narrowly beat his previous best of 8.55 by 0.01, earning second place in the preliminaries in 8.54 seconds.  His performance qualified him for the finals where he crossed the finish line in 8.48 seconds, shattering his short-lived personal best by 0.06 seconds.  His final performance earned him fourth place overall in the 60 meter hurdles.  Campbell represented the Brandeis women’s squad in the 60 meter hurdle race and placed eighth with a time of 9.47 seconds, qualifying her for the finals; unfortunately, though, Campbell was unable to complete the race.

In addition to the 60 meter hurdles, veteran sprinter Devin Hiltunen ’23 completed the 60 meter dash in 8.23 seconds, finishing eleventh overall, while Brandeis men’s rookie Matthew Yue ’26 placed 15th overall with a time of 7.40 seconds.

The Judges competed in several additional events, including the 800 meter run, 60 meter dash, 400 meter run, triple jump, high jump and pole vault.  Rookie runner T.J. Carleo ’26 finished second overall in the 800 meter run in 1:53.81.  This set a new personal record for Carleo, narrowly surpassing his previous best time of 1:53.84 that he achieved just a week prior in the University Athletic Association (UAA) invitational.  Teammate Samuel Kim ’24 completed the 800 meter dash roughly four seconds after Carleo, earning him 16th place.  Danny Krigman ’25 tied his personal record in the 60 meter dash, crossing the finish line in 7.20 seconds earning 12th overall.  Multifaceted athlete Liz Korn ’24 completed the 400 meter dash in 1:01.3, placing ninth overall and teammates Shaniece Nugent ’26 and Smiley Huynh ’24 both placed in the top 10 in their respective events.  Nugent jumped a total of 10.65 meters in the triple jump event, while Huynh cleared 3.21 meters in the pole vault events.  Morris-Evans also placed fifth in the high jump event with a height of 1.88 meters, 0.02 meters shy of his personal record of 1.90 meters.

The Tufts Last Chance Invitational concluded the indoor track and field season for the Brandeis Judges.  They begin their outdoor season on Saturday, Mar. 25th at the Bridgewater State Invitational.
