Both men’s and women’s tennis went to Colby on March 12 for two Division III top-25 matches. Ranked 24 and 20 respectively, the Brandeis men’s and women’s tennis lost 1-8 in both head-to-head matches. Colby’s men’s and women’s teams were ranked 20 and 24.
Following the men’s doubles matches, Colby led 2-1, winning two of the three matches. Tommy Harrison ’26 and Dylan Walters ’24 lost 8-5 to Jake Cohen and Jan Wegner from Colby at first doubles, while seniors and captains Hunter Levine ’23 and Simon Kauppila ’23 beat Colby players Sam Henry and James Bogdanovic 8-4 in second doubles. In the first singles match, Walters lost the first set 0-6 but quickly bounced back to win the second set 6-3. For the final set, Walters barely lost 4-6. Kauppila’s match also went to three sets. He won the first set 6-0, but lost the second 2-6. His last set was tough and ultimately he lost it 0-6. Levine’s single match started off really close as the first set went to 6-8. But he lost the second set as well 1-6. Junior Chen Liang ’24 had a singles match that also went to three sets. His first set was close, but he was defeated 5-7. He bounced back in the second and won 6-1. The final set was extremely close, but Liang ultimately fell 7-10. Overall, the men’s team fell to Colby 1-8.
On the women’s side, the Judges started by playing close doubles matches. Ella Chase ’26 and Rebecca Suarez ’26 teamed up and nearly won their match. They barely lost 6-8. Sophomore Cecilia Davis ’25 and junior Ella Subramanian ’24 later got the Judges on the board after they won their doubles match 8-6. So after doubles, Brandeis was trailing 1-2. Suarez started the singles matches with two tough sets. Nancy Zhang ’26 followed with a close three set match. She lost the first set 3-6, but won the second 6-4. However, in the last set she fell 4-10 to lose the match overall. Junior Jiayi Zhang ’24 later played two very competitive sets. She barely lost 4-6 and the second 3-6. Overall, the women’s team fell to Colby 1-8.
Up next for the men’s team is an away match against Renselaer Polytechnic Institute on March 18. The womens team’s next match is at home against Wesleyan University on March 22.
