To acquire wisdom, one must observe

Livin’ La Vida Loca (en Brandeis)

It should be no surprise that students are once again stressed about housing selection. Hundreds of students get their numbers chosen by fate, and that fate will decide if you get a comfy life in your next semester, if you will be panicking on selection day or if you have to accept your new home being a cardboard box. It’s Brandeis’ version of March Madness, causing blood, sweat and tears to get a quality place to sleep. When it comes to Brandeis housing, there are the sleek and modern dorms with good heating and a nice location, and ones that feel so far away and/or ones that are just old and dirty. That is not even considering the complications that come with building a group and aiming for certain types of dorms in which there are small amounts. Overall, it is a minefield and many people get their hopes up for nothing. Times were released this week and selections will be made next week. Those days will be ones of constant refreshing and panic, as if students do not have enough to worry about with midterms happening. A little later might be easier on people’s minds in terms of working, but putting it off can create more worrying. So, no matter when housing selection is done, most people’s stress will be at a year high. The difficulties of housing have not really changed much since last year, but the expected nature does not make anything easier. This campus has too many students for the amount of dorms that we have. That is shown in the fact that Foster Mods used to be only for seniors, but now we just have too many students that the seniors do not get this privilege anymore and the Mods are available for juniors and seniors. Even with that change, there are still hundreds of students who have to search through Waltham real estate to find a home. Get ready to fast track into adulthood! Little improvements not changing things should show that there is a big problem. To be fair, Brandeis is working on changes and there are new dorms that are being planned out and will soon be built to help some students. Of course, these dorms will not be finished until practically all of the current students graduate, so those students are out of luck. They just have to go through the trench of this year and pray they get something shiny and happy for this year’s housing. And to all of the people who will be at Brandeis in 10 years, I hope you are happy with your glorious new housing. Although, I am sure you will still have the same problems that we have, as Brandeis is not great at helping the students with housing in general.
