The Hoot Editorial Board apologizes for the exclusionary language used and harm caused by the article “Argonautika review: Good, but not without flaws” published on March 28. The sentiment of these hurtful statements is not in alignment with the values of this paper, nor the kind of rhetoric that we aim to promote. We have corrected the issue in our online version of the article and have formally addressed this issue internally. As we move forward, we will ensure that future articles promote the community of inclusivity and diversity we aspire to cultivate. We deeply regret the impact of this article. We sincerely apologize for our failure to live up to our standards and promise to do better in the future.
We would also like to acknowledge that incorrect information was published in that article regarding the producers and licensing of the play. The play was produced by Hold Thy Peace, not the Brandeis Theater Department. Although the Theater Department did provide support, “Argonautika” was an entirely student-run production. “Argonautika” was written by Mary Zimmerman through a special licensing arrangement with Brett Adams LTD. “Argonautika” is not a Greek tragedy, although it was adapted from a Greek epic poem. Finally, the bull puppets mentioned in the article should have been attributed to Hold Thy Peace’s puppet masters rather than unnamed costumers. We apologize for any confusion caused by the inclusion of this incorrect information.
