The Brandeis women’s soccer team experienced a sudden loss of momentum this week, as their perfect record disappeared with a 2-1 double-overtime loss to Springfield College on Saturday and a 2-2 tie with Bridgewater State College on Wednesday. The Judges, who had not allowed a goal this season, now fall to 4-1-1 as their UAA schedule draws ever closer.Neither Springfield nor Brandeis were able to find the net in the first half of Saturday’s game. The Judges’ lack of punch came despite outshooting the Pride 7 to 2 in the period and collecting five corner kicks. Izabella Miranda ‘12 broke open the scoring in the 70th minute on an assist by Tiffany Pacheco ‘11, but Springfield answered just 64 second later on a strong free kick by senior Delaney Cantrall. The Pride played a very physical second half, collecting ten fouls, and both teams had strong chances towards the end of regulation time.The first overtime period saw domination from the Judges. They collected six shots, forcing Sue Jenny ‘09 to make two saves. There were no goals scored until the second period, however, when rookie Jen Jahoda headed home a ball from Cantrall to give Springfield the win after 104 minutes of playing time.
Jenny had a spectacular match, making seven saves to preserve Springfield’s chances. Brandeis has four players collect at least four shots, picking up 23 shots over the course of the game.
Despite an early goal by Bridgewater State (courtesy of Kaitlin Lamothe ‘09 in the 14th minute), the Judges came out firing on Wednesday. Sophomore Ellie Einhorn scored her first goal of the year in the 16th minute off a corner kick by Alanna Torre ‘12, and Izabella Miranda added her third in the 39th minute; Melissa Gorenkoff ‘10 picked up the assist. Brandeis registered eight shots in the half.
The second period was incredibly active; the teams totaled seventeen shots, eleven of them on goal. The goalkeepers came up huge, however, and each made five saves to keep the game from turning into a shootout. The lone goal came in the 84th minute, when junior Kristina McSharry received Lamothe’s pass and shot it past Hillary Rosenzweig ‘10. Neither team managed a shot on goal in either overtime, and Brandeis had its first tie of the season.Overall, the Judges are still looking like a strong team on the season. They’re outshooting their opponents by a 109-52 margin and outscoring them 12-4. The Judges look to get back on the winning track as they take to the road against Clark University on Saturday.
