South Street crossing-light pole knocked down

The crossing-light pole in front of the entrance to Linsey Pool was knocked down by a vehicle traveling on South Street the evening of Friday, Jan. 18, according to an email released to the Brandeis community by Director of Public Safety Ed Callahan on Jan. 23, five days after the incident.

Both crossing lights have been rendered inoperable, said the email, although no one was injured in the incident. The City of Waltham Wires Department is making repairs, reported Callahan in the email. Callahan asked for the assistance of the Waltham Police in guarding the crosswalk but only for the “evening rush-hour period” during the hours between 3 to 7 p.m.

The email also encouraged community members to use Squire Bridge, which goes above South Street, as an alternate means of crossing. Callahan thanked the community for their attention to this safety concern and also encouraged community members to “exercise caution when crossing any street or intersection.”

The City of Waltham Wires Department, who is repairing the crossing lights, is responsible for the maintenance of traffic signals, fire alarms, the city’s radio system and fiber optic cables. The department also performs all electrical work within municipal buildings, performs electrical inspections for any electrical work performed within the city of Waltham and is in charge of installing Christmas lights.
