UAA track and field championships comes to Gosman

On Feb. 25 and 26 Brandeis University hosted the University Athletic Association (UAA) championships. Over the course of the two days both the men’s and women’s side finished with scoring performances. Beginning with the first day’s events, the Judges not only scored points but also had competitors move on to the finals during the second day’s events.

Smiley Huynh ’25, competing in both the pole vault and long jump, was able to score points in those two events which proved her to be the highest scorer for Brandeis on saturday. Huynh came in fourth in the pole vault by clearing a height of 3.43 meters, which became a new personal record for her, and she came in sixth in the long jump with a distance of 5.03 meters.

On the men’s side, two individual competitors managed to score points in their events. Dion Morris-Evans ’23 scored in the high jump as he placed sixth with a height of 1.88 meters. He did, in fact, tie in height with two other competitors from other schools but since he had missed in a previous attempt he was placed in sixth below the other two.

Artemis Reynolds ’23 was the second individual on the men’s side to score points when she set a new personal record for herself (over a foot from her previous best) with a throw of 14.21 meters in the 35-pound weight throw.

But the Judges were also able to bring in points in both distance medley relays. On the men’s side, TJ Carleo ’26, Leo Schiappa ’26, Samuel Kim ’24 and Willem Goff ’24 finished with a time of 10:43.93 to come in sixth overall in the race. On the women’s side Ella Warkentine ’26, Hannah Bohbot-Dridi ’25, Victoria Morrongiello ’23 and Bridget Pickard ’23 finished seventh with a final time of 12:44.79.

While these performances on Saturday earned the Judges points, only four Judges in total (two from the men’s and women’s side respectively) were able to qualify for the finals on Sunday. Beginning with the women’s side: Alya Campbell ’24 came in eighth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.31 seconds and Liz Korn ’24 finished sixth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:00.15. And on the men’s side: Carleo, reaching a new personal record, ran the 800-meter with a time of 1:54.25 coming in sixth and Morris-Evans finished fifth in the 60-meter hurdles running a time of 8.65 seconds.

Those four Judges made it to the finals on Sunday but joining them were fellow teammates competing in the mile, 3000-meter run and in field events as those events did not compete the day before.

Finishing fifth in the 60-meter hurdles was Morris-Evans with a time of 8.55 seconds making it the best individual performance by a Judge on Sunday. And two Judges were able to place in the top eight in shot put making it the highest scoring events for the Judges. Cam Peirce ’25 came in sixth with a distance of 12.92 meters (a personal best for him) which was followed by Jonathan Hau ’23 who placed seventh with a distance of 12.72 meters (a personal best for him as well).

Carleo, one of the four Judges to have sixth place finish on Sunday, came in sixth in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:53.84 (a new personal record which beat the personal record in the 800 he had set the day before). Korn finished sixth in the 400 meters with a time of 59.98 seconds which was her second time breaking the one minute barrier. The fourth Brandeisian to come in sixth was Shaniece Nugent ’26 who tied her personal record in the triple jump with a distance of 10.98 meters.

Campbell was able to improve her time from the day before in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.28 seconds (0.03 seconds better than her time the day before) which placed her in eighth. Like the day before, Brandeis was also able to pick up points in the relays. The women’s 4×400 meter team of Korn, Yahni Lapa ’23, Devin Hiltunen ’23 and Bohbot-Dridi finished in sixth with a time of 4:06.88. And on the men’s side in the 4×400 meter relay Morris-Evans, Samuel Kim ’24, Schiappa and Danny Krigman ’25 finished seventh with a time of 3:29.99.

All in all, the Judges finished sixth on the men’s side with 21 points and seventh on the women’s with 20 points. Brandeis track and field will return next week at Tufts University to compete for their last chance to make it to the NCAA championships.
