Shelton Stewart 06 placed himself closer to making Brandeis history by scoring his 37th goal, moving him into fourth place on Brandeiss career goal-scoring list. He is now only one point away from 100 in his career. The goal came on a direct free kick from 24 yards away, as the Judges defeated Colby-Sawyer 1-0. Brandeis improved its record to 5-2, while Colby-Sawyer dropped to 3-5.
Stewarts goal came in the 65th minute, breaking the 0-0 stalemate. Stewart scored on a free kick when Doug Slater of Colby-Sawyer was issued a yellow card. The shot went past the Colby-Sawyer wall and settled into the lower right corner of the goal. Coach Mike Coven said it was a good, tough win for the team. It was a sloppy game. We played in a downpourthey hadnt cut the grass, it was a heavy ballbut we won, he exclaimed.
In his first start of the season, goaltender Jake Knoll 08 made two saves for the Judges to ensure the shutout.
This season, Brandeis has suffered four devastating injuries, making it a lot tougher for the team to play well consistently. In the game against Colby-Sawyer, Adam Guttman 08 broke his hand. His status for the rest of the season is questionable. Coven commented that it has been a season of catastrophic injuries and it is tough to always adjust the starting lineup based on who is physically available. Its tough to be consistent with the amount of injuries [we have had this year], said Coven.
Stewart 06 has been receiving much praise from his teammates and coaches this season. Coven exclaimed, He is probably the best player we have had [at Brandeis].
Brandeis played Wednesday at Bridgewater State College in Bridgewater, Mass. The Judges continue their schedule against Case Western Reserve Univ. at Cleveland, Ohio tomorrow and play MIT at home on Wednesday.
The team is happy with their play through the first seven games of the season but Coven believes, the two games we lost should have been tied.
Brandeis is heading towards the conference play section of the schedule and the team recognizes they have a rough road ahead of them. Weve got a lot of very tough games to go and hopefully well be able to win a bunch of them, Coven said.
