Lou Piniella will not return next season to manage the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. He will accept a buyout of the final year of his contract and will be free to take another job. He spent most of the year bickering with the front office over a lack of payroll to sign quality players.

Jim Tracy, former manager of the L.A. Dodgers, has agreed to a contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The New York Giants and the New York Jets have reached an agreement to co-build and co-own a new stadium in the Meadowlands Complex in New Jersey. It will be the first ever co-owned stadium in the NFLs history.

Deuce McAllister will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL. McAllister had just signed an 8 year deal to stay with New Orleans this summer.

St. Louis coach Mike Martz will be on an indefinite leave of absence due to a bacterial infection of the heart.

Basketball
Amare Stoudamire will miss four months of the season after having surgery on his left knee. The surgery was originally just diagnostic, but a joint surface defect was found.

Steve Smith retired from basketball two weeks ago. Smith averaged 14.3 points per game over a 14 year career in which he played for six teams, including Miami and Atlanta.

Vlade Divac was placed on waivers by the Lakers. He will likely retire. Divac hopes to become an assistant coach and a scout with the Lakers.

Mike James was traded from the Houston Rockets to the Toronto Raptors for Rafer Alston.
Eddy Curry and Antonio Davis were traded from the Chicago Bulls to the New York Knicks for Michael Sweetney, Tim Thomas, and draft picks.

Hockey
Atlanta has resigned Ilya Kovalchuk. Kovalchuk had been preparing to play in Russia this season if Atlanta did not resign him soon.

Curtis Joseph will head to the injured list for the Detroit Red Wings after aggravating a groin injury.
