The Brandeis womens soccer team was able to pull out a victory against Wellesley College in Wellesley on Tuesday (Sept. 19) afternoon thanks to a big goal in the 80th minute by Sarah Jasak 08 to give Brandeis the 2-1 victory. Brandeis improved to 3-2 with its third win in a row, while Wellesley dropped to 3-2.
Co-captain Lisa Kaplin 07 gave Brandeis the early lead when she was able to take advantage of a free kick by co-captain Brittany Douglass 07. Douglass sent the ball into the box from just inside the midline where Jasak passed it to Kaplin for the score in the sixth minute. Kaplins goal, her 5th of the season gives her 31 career tallies, making her the 4th highest career goal scorer for Brandeis. The Judges put a great deal of pressure on Wellesley on the offensive end by outshooting their opponents 16-1 in the first half. Even with sixteen shots, Brandeis was able to put only one in the net to go into halftime with a 1-0 lead.
Wellesley picked up its game in the second half by creating more opportunities on offense. Alison Carney set up Dee Garrahan on a corner kick which was ultimately headed away by Douglass. The ball finally found the goal again in the 78th minute when Wellesley tied the game at 1-1. Haley Geller was able to capitalize off a rebound on a kick off the crossbar by Amelia Manderscheid.
Brandeis was able to reclaim the lead shortly thereafter when Jenna Lipawsky 09 slotted a ball into the box that Jasak sneaked past Wellesley keeper Katie Martore. Martore was able to stop fourteen shots for Wellesley, but was saddled with a loss. Brandeis keeper Amber DeBole '08, making her second start of the season, racked up seven saves in the win.
This victory follows the Lady Judges 3-1 victory over Clark back on Sept. 16. Kaplin recorded her 30th career goal in the contest and Lipawsky recorded the game-winner in the 33rd minute of play. Meredith Milstein 09 scored the insurance tally in the 80th minute. Brandeis out-shot Clark 14-8 in the contest;
Hillary Rosenzweig '10 stopped 6 shots for the Judges while her Clark counterpart Nolizwe Nondabula stopped 8.
Wellesleys next game is on Thursday when the travel to Coast Guard for their first conference game of the season. Brandeis will host Gordon, also on Thursday. Both games are slotted to start at 7 p.m.
