We are nearly one month into the new year, and you know what that means: award show season. Winter is packed with some of the biggest upcoming award shows of the year. From magical moments to controversial acceptance speeches, the events at these major award shows are memorable, if only because of the trending memes they inspire. While the Golden Globes already occurred Jan. 7, you can still catch many other amazing upcoming award shows within the next couple of months.
The 60th Annual Grammy Awards will occur this upcoming Sunday, Jan. 28, at 7:30 p.m. on CBS. The Grammys are usually held mid February, but this year, since the Winter Olympics are taking that time slot, they will occur at the end of January. The show features an exciting lineup, including Lady Gaga, broadway singer Patti Lupone, SZA, a breakthrough artist from this past year, Childish Gambino and rock icons U2 and Sting. All eyes will be on Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee, Justin Bieber, Childish Gambino, Jay-Z, Bruno Mars and Kendrick Lamar, who have nominations for the most prestigious awards of the night. The British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) will premiere on Feb.18, which can be livestreamed on the BAFTA YouTube channel with host Joanna Lumley. “The Shape Of Water” leads the nomination pool with over 12 nominations, including the award for Best Film. Also nominated is “Dunkirk,” “Call Me By Your Name,” “Darkest Hour” and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.” Tune in to the livestream to keep up with this past year’s major films.
Just one day before the Oscars, the Independent Spirit Awards, which celebrates the year’s most notable independent films, will be held on March 3. Comedians John Mulaney and Nick Kroll will host the show for the second year in a row. Notable nominations include “Call Me By Your Name,” “The Florida Project,” “Get Out,” “Lady Bird” and “The Rider.” If you are an avid fan of all kinds of films, beyond the ones that are more mainstream, this is definitely an interesting show to check out during the weekend of the Academy Awards.
Jimmy Kimmel will host the 90th Annual Academy Awards which will air March 4 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. The nominations were released Tuesday and like the BAFTA awards, “Shape Of Water” leads with over thirteen nominations. “Dunkirk” comes as a close second with eight nominations. Both are nominated for the most prestigious award of the night (and the hardest one to deliver correctly), Best Picture. “The Darkest Hour,” “Call Me By Your Name,” “Get Out,” “Lady Bird,” “Phantom Thread,” “The Post” and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” are also nominated for Best Picture. The nominations were just released and we are already seeing many historical achievements. Film director, Agnès Varda, at the age of 89, is the oldest person in history to be nominated for an Oscar. Meryl Streep earned her 21st nomination, breaking her own record for having the most Academy Award nominations for an actress of all time. Composer John Williams, nominated for Best Original Score for his work on “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” remains the most nominated living individual, with over 51 nominations. Even though the Oscars are a little over a month away, it is never too early to anticipate the most memorable awards show of the year.
Finally, the iHeartRadio Music Awards will take place March 11. While hosts or performances have not been announced, the nominations spotlight the popular music genres of the past year, honoring both established and new artists. One of the most anticipated awards of the night will be Best Solo Breakout Artist. The nominees include people who went solo after breaking away from their X-Factor formed music groups, including Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne and Camila Cabello. Awards season is in full gear, and there are many interesting ceremonies coming up that showcase the works of entertainment in 2017. Some will win awards for the tenth time, and some will win awards for the first time.
